Dimmer switch on a 1000w light fixture???

I had a 1000 watt light fixture that created way too much heat than I could dissipate and I wanted to know if I could use some sort of dimmer switch or if there was some way to lower the wattage going to the fixture that could lower the light output, thus creating less heat. Is this possible? Respect to all who give thoughtful considerations. Thank you in advanced.

Dimmer switch, no. Some electronic ballasts have built in switches for different bulbs (I can run my 600w ballast at 400w).
