thanks for the tip! what do you think of that reflector on Amazon? will i be hating life without air cooling ducts? it's 400 watts, will the room get too hot?

go down to homedepot and look at the street lamps they are hps lights. around here they are under 50 bucks
sorry if i'm kinda slow, but what exactly do you mean by streetlamps? just the bulb? a two story tall pole with a hps on it? i have seen up to 400 watt bulbs at home depot and lowes, for about $20, but i need the ballast and reflector too. if you could elaborate for me because i don't know much about "street lamps" besides that they are tall and are on some streets, and probably won't plug into a wall socket!

i'm sorry, but i don't know what he means by street lamps.... do he really mean street lamps? as in the ones on a street, that are like thirty feet tall? i'm sure he means just the light, but what kinda voltage is that? can i somehow plug that in a wall socket?

thanks anyone!

I have to advise against using lights that are not designed for the purposes of growing. Sure they may be cheaper, but they're designed for nothing other than light output (like steetlamps). They would require proper wiring, and they're not engineered for the conditions of a grow room like high humidity.

Go with something that is designed for the purpose and proven for a little more money. You could have a big hazard on your hands otherwise.

it's just the light. i'm not going to take you there and hold you hand and show you where their .youare going to have to do it yourself.it uses 120v. its real easy to do.

IMO I wouldn't want to mess with HID lights. I like my Lumatek. Quiet and efficient works for me. I have wired up 18 CFL'S together as a veg fixture, but haven't really tested it on a grow yet. Those ballast and aluminum wing style reflectors are way cheaper than the air cooled ones. :bigjoint:

it's just the light
Do we really have to hold hands for you to not be so vague? stating that "it is a light" is a little obvious, don't you think, squintlock holmes? what fixture, a streetlamp fixture? watts? color temps? sockets? is it a mogul base? does it have a ballast? remote or integrated? do you steal the damn thing?

ive bought two 70 watt HPS lights from Lowes @ $35 each. Had to rewire it, but it works great for closet microgrows

That 400 wt your looking at looks like it'll do the trick. Thats not to bad of a price. Those digital ballasts are priced fairly similar no matter who sells them.

i'm concerned about the reflector, should i be? it doesn't have a tempered glass to protect anyone in the room from the bulb exploding.... does that really happen? i've heard stories of people getting hurt.... nor does it have a spot to connect a cooling duct... that's mainly what i meant by "is it too cheap" but i've never done this before, so do i really need an air cooled reflector?

that looks like a lot of work for only 70 watts, can you just use that security light "as is"??? btw, how many two foot tall clones can you bud with 70 watts? has anyone used one of those lowes dusk to dawn in the form they come in? i mean, can i just hang the whole thing over a few plants? or is there a major reason why i should take it apart and do all that stuff in the picture?

Here look at these. Cheap and all sizes.

I took 3 150hps ones that i just took from a closed down chevy's... ya know the ones they use to shine on the side of the building, then made my own air cooled reflector from sheet metal, angle iron, and a sheet of glass. The only tools needed were a drill, rivet gun, tin snips and a little time. works just as good as any of those pre fabbed lights and it only cost me about $40. Ill post some pics tomorrow if anyone in interested. Just gut the lights out, relocate your ballasts and extend the wire and your good to go.

Or if you wanted just get one of those 400w HPS from that site. I would think you could just use it as is. The only problem with those is they are heavy as hell. The housings of my 150w lights were probably 10-12 lbs alone.
