if you grow your own how much money per year do you save?

how much is a small HPS with hood and fan?

why do people insist on growing with CFL's?

do you know they are full of mercury?

    why?

well the hps is a one time initial investment, which usually pays for it's self after the first harvest....i can't really defend cfls. besides we don't all have the beautiful cali sun.

who said anything about sun? this is the indoor section.

i see these people all day begging to learn how to grow plants with CFL's. i don't get it. like you said HPS pays for itself first harvest. unless you are growing in a cupboard or small box then stop buying those poisonous things.

Well I will bite. I use them for veg because I don't want the extra heat involved with mh. I use no ventilation for veg and I am able to spread my light out over a pretty wide area. I feel I would need two 250's to do what I did with 216 watts not to mention the cost savings in forced ventilation. I am not growing many plants but I grew with 216 watts of cfl in custom made reflectors and they did just fine. They grew nice and bushy with zero stretching. Now I am not saying cfl's are better than mh for veg but I also can purchase cfl's at allot of local shops where I would have to order mh bulbs. I don't know how much money I would have saved over mh or hps but I amhappy with the results. I also am very careful with bulbs so I don't worry about the mercury. I guess I am not an environmentalist since all my vehicles are gas guzzling v8's.

However since the penetration is minimal on cfl's and placing them all around my plants in flower would be a nightmare and time consuming to move. So I run an hps for flower. I only burn an ounce a month so this setup works very well for me. I will most likely continue to grow this way until I move down to cali with you fdd.

What is to learn. Hook them up and grow. To the best of my knowledge the supposed best veg lights contain mercury as well. I think the popularity boils down to availability.
