i would go with the 250. 400 could be too much.

The heat from the 400 watt would be over whelming for your closet. You really don't need it for one plant either. Remember good reflective coating for your closet walls. Like white paint.

Chiln ...
I started out using a 250 HPS with an area very similar to yours and had good success. Each grow was good for four to six ounces of quality bud. Then I upgraded to a 430 HPS. The results were around six to eight ounces of quality bud. Over the past three years, I've been using a 600 HPS and the results are usually over 13 ounces of quality bud. I'm talking about the same area and the same amount of plants here.
If you upgrade to a stronger light, just keep in mind that you'll have to upgrade your heat exaustion right along with it.

I always grow a variety of strains. If I kept it to one strain per grow, I'm sure the yield would be a lot better ... probably a pound or more per grow. Right now, I have going: God-Bud, C-99, Trainwreak, A-9, and a Mexican cross. The God-Bud is trying to take over the entire cabinet. The Trainwreak is looking mighty, mighty sticky.
For ventilation: I have a light hood that is air-sealed with glass and it has two intake flanges. One is left open and the other is connected to dryer ducting. The dryer ducting is connected to a Hurricane Fan. The Hurricane Fan sucks air out of the cabinet, up the dryer ducting and out to the top of the cabinet. Once out of the cabinet, the dryer ducting goes into a 4" carbon scrubber that I have sitting on the top of the cabinet to purify the air. So, all the hot air in the cabinet is exausted out through the carbon filter and there is NO smell at all. I have two squirrel fans bringing cool air into the cabinet just a little above floor level and there is a small fan positioned up high that gently blows across the plants.
Here's a pic of the Hurricane fan. Hurricane Inline Fans You'd just need the small one ... the four inch one.

vi, aren't you afraid of getting moisture into your light ballast. if you are pulling air out of your gorw area, through your ballast, and out to a carbon scrubber, wouldn't moisture be going into your ballast also? just curious cuz I heard this is a no-no for lighting.

vi i cant afford that type of exaust system...im growin 1 plant at a time under a 250watt hps and guna use a mh conversion bulb for vegatative growth. what type of fan can i use to exaust the closet that isnt expensive....im guna have an oscilating fan inside the closet as well....
my main concern for this project is to exaust the air so that the smell is limited...i was planning to have a 6" exaust fan sucking air out of the closet aind flowing threw a dryer duct which will b positioned to go out a window....will this help ventilate the closet while limiting smell as well??....if ne1 knows where i can find cheap fans or conversion bulbs lemme kno

your closet will smell less but your outside will smell more
