Lightbulb Let's Talk About Ozone
Hey guys and gals,

I am now exhausting my grow room into my garage since I live in a rather crowded neighborhood. I have a diy carbon filter on the exit side that is basically a universal carbon prefilter wrapped around aluminum mesh. My ladies have been stinking for about a week now. They are only 2 weeks and couple days old. The filter worked for a couple days but now I can smell it faintly in the garage. I have more filters that I can wrap around another time or two to see if it helps. However, I have a living air ozone purifier that I bought awhile back and I know it works great but I have heard bad things about using them around plants. I have read up on the effects of negative ions and most studies show health benefits in people but irritation of the respiratory system in highly concentrated doses.

I want to use the sucker but I don't want to harm my plants. I could put it in the garage but it would have a much larger space to clean so I would have to run it at full tilt all the time. If I run the thing in the room which is 12x13 away from the plants do you think it would hurt? I am really only growing in the closet so the whole room isn't filled with cheeba. Let me know what you all think.

Ok, I work as an construction Electrician in Ontario Canada, Im currently working in Oakville Ontario on a water plant (all we do is water plants for the government). We are installing a giant ozone system worth over 2 million dollars. I have been to many saftey meetings on Ozone gas, and all I can say is use ozone at your one risk. Ozone is a very toxic gas that can kill you at very small ppm I beleive its 0.22 ppm. Ozone is so toxic that it can eat threw most things, including PVC, Aluminium, Stainless steel (higher grades are used in ozone systems) it will even eat Chlorine like it wasnt there. And as far as I know in high levels it could very well eat away at your plants. All I can say in the end is if you do use it only use very limitedly like 30 mins to an hour, I do some crazy things in my job but I would never fuck around with this gas, cerealy

Well I went ahead and put her in there and am still fine tuning it to get it just where it takes away the smell. I have it almost at it's lowest setting on the ionizer and fan. I have used this unit in our house before where it was working on a large square footage area and it did not seem to produce any ill effects. I was actually using it when I lived at home with my mom who had asthma. She did not have any increased respiratory problems when using the unit. I think this machine produces ozone in small enough amounts to be safe. I have it running basically full time so time will tell. I will let you guys know what I find out. I wish I had a way to measure the ppm of ozone in the air.

I have used ozone, with a neon transformer (not the solid state type) running 7500volts
across a 1/4 inch plate of glass inside of a length of very thick plastic drainage pipe, and a little fan to circulate the air through it. The plans might be somewhere on the net. Please be careful not to electrocute yourself, and it only needs to run for a few minutes every hour. Otherwise, you can actually buy a commercial unit, and spare yourself the risk of your house burning down. I could smell it, but no one ever had any ill effects from it. It is quite corrosive, so you need to do periodic maintenance and replacement of your grid if you use the home made style one. Approximately a 4x10 inch piece of 1/4 inch glass is used, glue some heavy steel grid material to each side with epoxy, and solder the high voltage leads to the grid and let er rip.

Oh, I forgot, the absolute best, for taking no chances, is to put the ozone generator in line with the exhaust from the grow room. Put it at the exhaust end of the fan, in which case the generator can be on at all times. This will absolutely kill all smells, people walking by might think you have an indoor pool or something.
