CFL vs HPS

I WAS going to buy an HPS to flower... but man 250$ is alot of cash...

My friend works at Homedepot and gives me free shit whenever... like lights..

So He gave me a shit load more today.. so I have 713 actual wats over 4 plants... Im about to flower in 2 weeks, i was wondering is 713 wats of CFL enough to make 4 plants really thick? I know its nothing like HPS but ..... 713 wats sounds like ALOT seeing as how the hps is only 400

how much of a difference will a 400w hps make over 713 wats of CFL in flowering.. Dont wana spend 250$ if i dont have to.

that sounds like WAY MORE than enough
and you'll have less heat issues to deal with than hps.

dude i know its enough... im asking how much of a difference will an 400w HPS make over the CFLs I have more or less will a 400w increase my yield over 713 watts of CFL

they don't add, but that doesn't mean you can't get real good results
each bulb has a 'sphere' of light that if plant leaf/bud is in, optimal results will be achieved
just means that no cfl should obscure another in the straight line to the plant
at this wattage, 700+ watts, hps would be better, but $250 better? only you can decide that

Ya man, with that amount of cfls, 4 plants will flower nicely. The light wont penatrate the canopy like a hps would, but you dont have to worrie as mutch about heat.

Just make sure at least most of the cfls are 2700k for flowering.

what if i had some at the bottom of the plant pointing up at it? Would that penetrate up into the plant?

no, not under the plants just at teh sides will do they dont do phtosynthesis form under the leaf, only the top green side of leaf good luck,

Cfls are cheap, thats about it. they defintitly dont have a lower heat rating than hps. alot of heat associated with hps comes from the ballast. thats why you should get digital remote ballasts. much cooler and you can keep them out of your room or at least far away from your plants.

You seem to want a straight answer cfl lights are for people with little money or little space.HPS is the light you see people getting real results with.This point is argued all the time.

this is partly true, for certain situations
but for those who do not want to grow a 1/2 lb(and there are many), cfl's are much better for micro grows - go down to a 100w grow and cfl's are better - if you grow larger, well HPS is tough to compete with on a cost/watt basis

100watts of HPS will always beat 100 watts of cfl...

A 400w HPS will give you all the bud you can smoke... the last light you buy...

CFLs... work... I have done it my self...

But if you want to produce the best buds you can at the lowest price...

what have you seen for results with for the 100w hps? genuinely would like to compare results
with 78w of 2700k got 35g of dry bud
my guess is you don't just use hps for small grows, but maybe you do
