how far should my 400w mh be above them?

3 feet is ok but to really know you should put your hand over the tops of your plants under the light if it seems uncomfortable then raise the light a bit.

This would be a good rule to follow when your flowering but seeing as your seedlings are so young and small i would keep it further away, they dont need that much light at this stage.

3ft for now, and then in about a week in a half drop it down closer till you feel that feal that heat on your hand then raise it back up till you dont.

no wonder half my seedlings died-.- I used that rule and it must have gotten too hot.
