Cannabis ruderalis is a putative species of Cannabis originating in central Asia. It flowers earlier than C. indica or C. sativa, does not grow as tall, and can withstand much harsher climates than either of them. Cannabis ruderalis is purported to go into budding based strictly on age and not on changes in length of daylight. This kind of flowering is also known as auto-flowering. Cannabis ruderalis has a lower THC content than either C. sativa or C. indica; thus, it has little use as a drug. However, C. indica drug strains are frequently cross-bred with C. ruderalis to produce plants combining a higher THC content with the hardiness and reduced height of ruderalis.
The term 'Ruderalis' was originally used in the former Soviet Union to describe the varieties of hemp that had escaped cultivation and adapted to the surrounding region.
Similar Ruderalis populations can be found in most of the areas where hemp cultivation was once prevalent. The most notable region in North America is the midwest, though populations occur sporadically throughout the United States and Canada. Big wild ruderalis plantations also reigning in the center and eastern Europe, most of them in Lithuania, Belarus, Latvia, Estonia and around of these countries. Without the human hand aiding in selection, these plants have lost many of the traits they were originally selected for, and have acclimatized to their locale.
Though they contain little THC, these plants hold large potential for use in breeding, both in hemp and marijuana applications. Early flowering and resistance to locally significant insect and disease pressures are but a few of the important traits present in these feral populations.

Thanks a lot. I thought it grew in Russia, and you've confirmed it. it's just that I've been thinking about this for a while as I'd really love to do an outdoor grow in this country. I was thinking of buying some ruderalis seeds and crossing them with white russian. Isn't ruderalis auto-flowering? I suppose it would take me testing it out (ruderalis/russian) to find out if this trait has been passed through to my hybrids.

Is it better to cross more than one pair of plants? Or like, say 10 of each?

How many generations does it take to develop your own strain, so long as the plants are compatible? Is compatibility (in respect of producing offspring that are constant in their behaviour and appearance) something that can be gained through breeding the same plants and their offspring for generations?

What if I just planted a male and female of each, let them seed and then plant the seeds outdoors and just leave them for a couple of years to get on with it?

Hey, Firsttimer ... welcome to the club. We've all been there. This is a learning process. No one is born a cannabis farmer, eh?

Think of it like this: What we are trying to do indoors, is to duplicate what happens in nature. If a cannabis seed germinates under full sun in the Spring or Summer when the soil warms up, it continues to grow in the vegative state because the sun is out 18 hours a day. As Fall begins and progresses, the daylight shortens to 12 hours a day. As the day shortens, the plant, which dies each year, says to itself: "Hey, I'm gonna die pretty soon, so I had better start thinking of reproducing my specie." Well, that's when it starts to flower. The males start to flower too ... and grow pollen sacs (think of them as testicles). As the female flowers, the pistils begin to form ... and they reach out to try to collect the male's pollen. The buds grow and as they do, they become more and more sticky. This is more of that attempt to collect the male's pollen. As the female ages, the pistils (that's the white hairs) start to turn brown and the crystals become cloudy. This is an indication that the life span of the plant is nearing the end. Its also the indication that its time to harvest the plant. The longer you let the plant go, the more body stone you will get from the plant and the less head high you will get. The idea is to find the happy medium for your taste and the strain you are growing.

That's about it in a nutshell.

Vi

Thanks for the "keep on truckin'" speech ViRedd....

Im still worried about whether or not they show sex before the 12/12 starts... I mean, not to say that i dont trust all you guys, but Greg Greens Cannabis Grow Bible says that they show sex before you cut the light cycle, and this is just the signal that you CAN start the light cycle...

If this is wrong im sorry, id just like reassurance....

The only way they can show sex before flower cycle is in their appearance and even then this can be misleading. For example our tallest skinniest plant ended up a female. We had it picked right from the start as the alpha male, how wrong we were. We also pulled a couple of hermies from the garden, wish I'd kept them now, but there you go. Anyway, chill. i was worried about this too as I believed the same thing you did. Telling them apart is a piece of piss and it takes the males ages to drop their load. You'll have plenty of time to pull them out.

You need to induce flowering by giving them 12 hours of uninterupted darkness each day for 2-3 weeks. During the 3rd week they will show sex and continue flowering as either male or female.

HTH
actually you are incorrect. My strawberry cough's were all on 24/0 and about 4 weeks into veg they showed sex on their own.. pistils coming out of the nodes..
