I use the 42 watt CFLs, but they are only about $8 at my Lowes/WalMart/Target and cheaper if you buy bulk. I was able to get a box of 12 at Lowes with a 10% off coupon for around $70, and bought cheap reflectors/plugs for about $15 more. For about $85 spent over a couple weeks, I now have a great setup. I would agree with you that if it's 40 Euros for 1 bulb, just get an HPS.
I love them because I was able to get a complete setup that puts out over 22,000 lumens, requires only a small fan to displace the heat and I keep them about 3" from my plants. I don't have that much height to spare in my grow area, so this is crucial. Also, the total wattage on my 8 is 336, so it's lower than the 400w HPS. I also like them over HPS because with 8 bulbs, I am able to reposition them when I get rid of males and give side lighting to females. My grow is in week 2 of flowering and I had to kill 2/4 because they were males, and I'm excited to see what my 2 ladies will yield. I will also be cloning and starting another CFL grow this summer.
