Question Root space

Im planning out my first grow. I'm going to do DWC, white berry fem, SoG, T5 Fluorescent, home built room. I have a few questions about roots and the area needed for the plants roots in DWC. "Do roots need lots of space to grow, or just enough to be fed?". I know for soil (boo) you want a decent ammount of space, enough for roots to grow and seek food and water, but being careful to avoid root boundage. So my thought (and what i've read) is that for Hydro (yey!) you only need enough space for a nice solid root system. My plan was to use 5 gallon buckets... but then though i could condense the space, possibly making it easyer to do shelf SoG growing.

Can anyone straighten me out? Thanks.

P.S. Female seeds... Myth or Fact? I say myth, but if its fact maybe it'll justify paying $70 for 5 seeds...

Hi,

DWC
small plants, (Clones with little or no Veg) 3 Liters per plant
plants grown from seed 5 Liters per plant.

Yes you can get femanised seeds.
To do it I think they get a feamale plant to bread witha feamale that has hermied. So there is only feamale DNA in the seeds, There is a higher risk of getting hermies from these seeds, but good breaders will do all they can to minamise this.

Well, i NEED to avoid HPS. I know its better, but i live in an apartment, and extremely limited money. The current draw, coupled with security issues, its best i avoid. Unless there's a way to do HPS with low current draw and such. Or i have a miss understanding of HPS... care to sort me out?

Also, i find all the time that you can do one plant per square foot. So if i have a grid, say 4 square feet, can i do a plant on each corner of the square foot (total of 9 plants) or the plant, then one foot radius out (total of 4 plants). Thanks.

well HPS is the most efficant. a 400 will do a 3x3 area, 600 for 4x4. Thats 600Watts thats the same as 6 100Watt indesent light bulbs, if you haven't already, replace the bulbs in your home with CFLs and get a HPS for growing. No problem.

What will be a problem in a stealth grow, is heat, you will need lots of fans and vents that could be an issue for you.

High powered CFLS might soot you better. But forget about using all 4x4 feet of space.

Best Addvice I can give you, is send a couple of weeks looking at peoples grows before you spend any money.

Hey SparkeySTi,

I have a similar operation in place to what you are planning, at 2 ft. deep x 2.5 ft. wide and 7 ft. tall. I'm in the final weeks of flowering two feminised strains, Strawberry Cough & Dutch Dragon. The 3 bagseed I started all turned out male. Feminised is worth the extra $ in my opinion.

They are in GH Waterfarms under two mixed 4 bulb (two 6500k & two 3000k bulbs) 2 ft. T5's that give off 16,000 total lumens. The reservoirs are 2 gallons. I have air stones in each reservoir to oxygenate the nutrients.

Heat hasn't been an issue at all this time for me. This may be my first successful grow. I've lost 3 others to too much heat from a 400 watt HPS/MH light. Heat is our enemy.

Good luck.

Heat, Space, and location are enemy for me. I've looked into CFL, and thats the way im going. I've debated between T-5 and CFL, and idk, but CFL seems better for me. Even if heat wasnt bad, living in apartments makes HID lights out of the question. From my research, if i do only the top cola's, i can get away without HPS and still get nice phat dense buds. Its for personal use, so 2 ounces a month will be enough. Anything more will get circulated for dirt cheap to a select few.

"There may only be one answer to the question, but there are always many ways to get there". I understand what optimal conditions are, but i cant ever provide that, so im trying to find what works best.

But my question now, 8 plants, 20in x 40in x 4in enough for the res and such? Its one part im hung up on, is how big my res should be and how far to space plants for SoG top cola's and such... i wouldnt think to far...

Clones stait into flowering. I think 3L per plant will do.
But you would be better off having one big container holding all the plant's. It will be a lot less time consuming and easyer to maintain stedy temps and PH.

True.. and thats what i want to do. Thus i was curious as if my math was correct in saying a 20inx40inx4in would be enough space for 8 plants. When i did my math, i was able to do 16x32x4, but not sure if that was over crowding cause i read somewhere that SoG top cola's can do fine with just 8 in of spacing and such. So i opended em up to a bit more space and what not. I think since i got my root question answered, im going to re-design my grow room and post a new thread for suggestions to make it better possibly. I've been thinking about this whole thing for a year now (had to wait to move out of moms house, and now im to poor to start up, plus still not all the way informed on the grow techniques i wish to use) and i think im almost ready.

Thanks guys. This site is a god send...
