I don't think it's going to hurt anything. I have let my ph meter dry out tons of times. I would end up forgetting to put the cap back on it and leave it sit there for 24 hrs and it's bone dry. It still reads ph levels perfect. I calibrate it every couple weeks and it's never been more than .1 off of the actual ph so I don't really think letting it dry out has any effect on it. Maybe they think the salts will start to build up on the probes and it won't take an accurate reading. Hell, I'm starting to believe that there are a lot of misinformed people out there that believe the hype these companies put out there. I'm sure the ph meter company would tell you that your meter is ruined and you should purchase another one, lol, and I'm sure they would be 100% right and isn't tell you that because they want more money from you, not at all lol. Go get you some of the PH calibrating liquid and test it to make sure it reads accurate. But again, I let my PH meter dry out, and remain dry, and I've had the same one for the past two years without anything happening to it. At one point in time, if I had to take a guess, I would say that I left the cap off my PH meter for about a month and a half, and only tested the PH level once every two weeks.

I've done plenty of things that people say you shouldn't or companies say you shouldn't because it would kill your plants, or what not without any bad effects.

i take mine to the hydro store and act like a helpless idiot. They cal it for me
I also buy my batteries from them and lots of other crap so they dont mind. I hate calibrating the damn things.

Mine drys out all the time and I dont change my batteries until its down below 40%... They are tough. You can get new PH probes for them for around $40. (they also swap these out for me)
