Hydro/Aero questions

I have a few questions in regards to which would be the best choice for a Atic

Also, out of Hydroponics / Aeroponics which would produce the faster crops/good bud quality? Price aside..

I've done some searching but haven't really come up with much. Also.. doesn't seem to be many build logs for Aero growing. If anyone has some links that would be great.

For the DIY guy, where do you get most of your parts? Lowes, Home Depot, and others that I should take a look at for pricing/ available parts?

I built myself a few DWCs and a Ebb and Flow. I got most of the parts from Home Depot, although I picked up some specialized parts from my local Hydroponic store. If you are building in an attic I would recommend going with aero, the hundreds of litres of water I need is a pain. It would be damn near unbearable to get up in the attic.

As for design, I just understood the fundamentals of what I was trying to do, and designed my own. I recommend you do the same.

Good luck.

I do understand the fundamentals very well. There are things I'm unsure about, like the cloning stage.. How to create proper clones but thats a question for another time.

I'm extremely mechanically inclined. The water, getting it up there isn't really a issue. I have my ideas for that department. I'm thinking of a system that will deal with 16 plants total.

Hydro speaking..

Growing: Little unsure of what method would be the best..

Flowering: Evan flow

Why do you recommend aero?

For cloning, use the "Cheapo Aero Cloner" in the DIY. Its awesome.

For flowering, the method I like Ebb and Flow, in my opinion it gets the best results. Also its much easier for 16 plants. But you have to check your plants and system everyday.

For you mothers I would say go with DWC, its idiot proof and easy to build.

Now that I know water isnt an issue, I retract my statements about aeroponics.

I need to brush up on the slang I guess.

DWC meaning?
Ebb meaning?

Aero or Hyrdo is still the unanswered question. Really need to start with that I suppose, due to that will plan where I'm going to head building wise. Any comments on that?

Controller bucket
3 pumps
couple airstones
fans

HYDRO

in Rockwool cubes

with Hydroton Pebbles

PH around 5.5-5.9

PPM's 600-800 clones and babies 1000-1200 hard veg 1300-1500 flowering

Hope this helps!~

Is there anything I should do to prep a attic for this growing? I mean clean work space.. thats going to be hard to achieve if you ask me, with the insulation.. Should I purify the air in the space? Do I need to section off the area from the rest of attic? I can't find any attic specific guides.. Any links would be great.

What system do you think would be better for a attic, personal opinion? (Hydro, Aero)

Just wanted to show you what NOT to order. Do not order from Quickgrowcanada.com. They suck ass. They talk real smooth to those who don't know shit about hydroponic setups. I learned my lesson very well. Looks great but having a bitch of a time with heat. I'm in the upper 90's and over 100 on the flowering side. It's a link to my gallery, just disregard the shed and other pics lol

Have some sort of matting to catch spills, they WILL happen no matter how safe you are. Paint every surface flat white to maximize the use of your lights, throw up drywall over insulation or put up white tarps. You should purify the air, but it should not be a problem to begin with if you have proper ventilation.

Only thing I'm worried about in the attic I guess at this time would have to be ambient air temps. It's fall here in Michigan, I just worry about what the summer will have in store.. I've been up there in the attic in the summer.. it's not bad but if your working..

I just up a thermometer/ humidity detector in the attic, so we'll see.

What would you say, stay away from anything hotter then 90F?
Also, could I get away with hotter ambient air temps if I'm 'chilling' the water with a aquarium chiller? Whats the rule of thumb, how much colder can the water be compared to the air temp without shocking the plants?

Attic are an issue unless you prepare them. Youll have to cover that insulation as when you have fans and venting happening all that fiberglass insulation will get on the buds and stick to the trichs meaning lung cancer unless you dont mind that. The floor just slap down sheets of 1/2 plywoould nailed to the florr joists. That will give you a good solid flat safe surface and cover the fiberglass. Now to wall the area up quickest way get some 2 x 4s lay some flat on the floor making a room outline .Your gonna need some panda film next as your gonna stapple the end of the fil to the 2x4 on top of it then nail another 2x4 over that sandwhiching the film good and tight then unroll some of the film straight up to the ceiling I assume its A frame rafters. When its straight up and down like a wal staple it to the rafters.I would then use a 2x4 at this seal where it meets the ceiling and nail it acros holding the plastic tight in place so now it wont rip. Then roll the plastic up the rafters to the top stapling as you go keeping it tight and then down the otherside of the rafters doing the same.Your basically in aa A shape are now and just have to go down the other side and use the 2x4s you did on the other side.Once thats done you just have the open ends to seal with the leftover plastic use tape at the corners to make good seals overlap the corners for strength. Now on the side you wann have the door at either end or both if you need to go all the way through buy a stick on zipper at like home depot or online. It has a sticky back with a peel off protector unpeel it position it where you want it then stick it to the plasctic. Unzip it and inside run a razor between the ziper teeth cutting hte plastic. Now you have a zipper door.Thats a quick how to. Now fastest will be aero grows then bubbler or dwc grows. I also agree to place plastic or pond liner on the floor as spills leaks or such will happen and water through the cieling sucks.I have posted a few differnt how to build aero systems from a basic 6 plant site to a 32 site variable aeo setup just serach my posted threads theres a 30 minute aero build to get you going. Almost all stuff can be gotten at homedepot.Heat and cold will be your enemy.attics hit over 130 in the summer if not insulated and finished so an ac unit will be need and probably a space heater in the winter depends where you live/Keep room around 78 tops at all costs no colder then 65 also this will stop stunting and small yields. Hope this helps some

Also on the res temp you want the water temps between 65 and 70 as any colder it shocks roots any hotter it kills them and invites bacteria but Im sure you will be using something like groteks h2o2 which will help

Attic :/. Seems like the basement will be the best choice, but how to conceal that one from general people...

Another thing I worry about.
Cross contamination.. Since I will have to travel a little bit to get to the
'work zone' fiberglass would have a chance to get on me so.. Is that really a big factor or?

The problem I see with a basement for my case.. I can make a grow area/flower area no problem, it's just oder, and concealment. I can't build walls to conceal it in a room. It isn't cost, the basement isn't owned by me.

Any thoughts on that? That would be my first choice for locations, but the attic is out of the way.

EDIT:
FLETCH <3

I like the panda film idea =). No more mylar needed. If I choose to do this in the basement.. what method would you use to secure it to the floor? I'm not going to use my stud gun and anchor them to the floor. Any suggestions?

Not here in Michigan. No heat on yet. Fall season, but I think the plan now is to do something in the basement.

Using Panda film.

What methods would you use to secure it to the floor? I'm not going to use my stud gun and anchor them to the floor. Any suggestions?

Fletch or anyone is free to answer this.. What would you choose, money aside. Aero or Hydro ?

My first thoughts were Hydro all the way, but would Aero make better plants/faster grow time?

Well if not gonna use a bang stick you could use good old subfloor glue in moderation as it can be pryed back up and scrapped from the concrete after if needed

Also a pvc made room is an option use 2 inch pvc pipe and corner fittings then sover with plastic. They sell clips made to hold plastic to these pipes also

Still unanswered but.. I've looked at Hydro setups/Aero setups.

I'm still in question to which I should use for my basement, Aero or Hydro?
