Howdy all,

I have been noticing a subtle but distinct aquarium smell coming from my rez.

I checked the roots and they are fine, very lite brown but shiny and healthy looking.

I completely disinfect my res each res change but the smell comes back after about four days. The scent doesnt fill up the room or anything, its very light, subtle but I want to get in front of any potential root killing infestation.

a lil h202 will kill any rot that forms if everything is healthy you should be cool

I use 1 tbl per gallon in the nute mix at rez change. Should I add it to the top off RO I give during the week? If so, in what concentration?

you use chemical nutes right??? the h202 will eat the organic nutes, i would add it at res change than let it go for a few hours and add nutes... if you want you could add it to the top off water it won't hurt just keep an eye on ppm of the nutes

Truthfully, nobody loves H2O2 more than me, but that's simply a band-aid.

The real issue is that you have light leaking into your rez somehow - once you remove any light leaks, you'll be fine.

H2O2 is good in the meantime, though.

I light proofed my rez's with foil tape and did a rez change as well, we will see how it goes.

I've never light sealed any of my reservoirs, ever. I used to get the smell in my reservoir, but I started using hygrozyme awhile back and that resolved it. H202 will do it too. I don't have my reservoirs directly exposed to light, but they certainly aren't light sealed. I do change my reservoir every 2 weeks and generally that's about how long it takes before there's any kind of smell.

I am using GH waterfarm systems and the bucket/rez is light tan in color and while it didnt allow in TONS of light, I could make finger animals behind it and see them clearly and to be honest, I really wasnt digging the aquarium smell.

I've used that system. Well I have a friend who purchased that system. I hate it, he hates it and it was the biggest PITA compared to the zillions of other systems we've used. I don't remember any problems with the reservoir though. Good luck with it and let me know if you end up liking the system. It just was just an annoying setup and required too much effort.

My Reservoirs are far from dark though. I don't even put a lid on my reservoir. I think your problem will be solved with H2O2.

For the hydro beginner, I think the waterfarm is perfect. I am not using the 8 pack, mind you but the single and I find it easy to use and very good for those just starting their experiments into hydro. The system allows you to really understand the hydro process, visually and is small enough so that if you make a mistake, its not that big a loss. For beginner's and those in a small space, its pretty good.

Once I have more space I will prolly go to a ebb & flow tray but for the space I have (3x3) its pretty good.
