Smile More flood and drain ?'s

Ok,
So, I am going to be using flood and drain for my new grow for both flowering and vegging (2 tables)

In my vegging side, I will be taking the seedlings that are in 1 inch cubes and placing them in 4 inchers. Then put them in the flood tray. Should I have clayballs in there also or do I just need that to cover the roots for flowering? Also, How often should I flood the tray in the beginning before the plants are large? I do not want to over water.

Thanks
