I tried it with 5" square pots back in the day because I had a MONSTER bag of perlite. I can't remember if I did ebb and flow or drip with it. I only tried it once as a reason to use old soil growing left-overs. It will work. I was using hydro nutes with it. You will get a little green algae on top. It didn't seem to hurt anything. You could put plastic or a layer of hydroton on it if it bothered you.

Actually, I don't believe what I did qualifies as "hempy" since the holes were in the bottom and I think his has them in the sides to allow a shallow res of water in the bottom of the container.
