Default Humidity too high
Hi All,

I have a little problem with Humidity. Here is what is going on.

I am growing some Dynamite, which is a 50 - 55 day flowering strain. I am on the sixth week of flowering running two homemade tote systems and a tray, all with drip setups.
I am going with the lucas formula of fertilizing. They are going wild with growth. The problem is the humidity is a tad too high.

When my wife comes home an night she smells a hint of skunk. There is no odor during the day, 6 am - 6 pm, because I have the lights off during that time. I go to bed about 11 pm and smell no odor then, but by the time she gets home at 2 am, she can smell it, though barely.

I made a carbon filter which worked for a while, but when I use it now, the temperature of the room goes up to 85+ and the humidity goes up to 75% +. The filter slows the rate of exaust to the point that the room builds up excess heat and humidity. If I go and remove the filter, the humidity and temperature instantly drop. 65% humidity and 75-80 degrees, and the odor disappears upstairs. Every day they seem to grow faster and faster and the humidity keeps inching up. I can find an alternative means of dealing with the odor, which is going out the chimney.

The further I get into flowering, the higher the humidity climbs. I am topping off five gallons a day. This is with only eight plants.

My exhaust fan is 265 cfm. The room is about 8' by 6'. I have two fans running, a box fan that pushes a lot of air and an oscillating fan blowing over the canopy. I do not have any inline fans pushing air into the room. The air intake is a little hole on one corner of the room, that is it. I do have a small blower and dryer hose which I could use to blow fresh air into the room.

I do not want mold problems. If I can't get the humidity down much, how can I avoid mold?

I will begin flushing in about a week, do they transpire less while in the final flushing stage or does humidity remain constant?

The 'problem' seems to be that I have them dialed in perfectly. They are in very rapid calyx formation right now. The growth is explosive and seems to be accelerating. I suspect that I have another week or so of rapid calyx formation so I don't want to turn down the PPM. WOuld turning down the PPM a bit slow the transpiration? i am at wits end on how to deal with this problem.

I dread having a mold problem.

Suggestions?

OK, I went into the room a 5:30 AM after it had been running all night, the humidity was at 65% and the temp was at 80 degrees F.

By the way, I am running two 1000w HPS. I have a lot of canopy in a relatively small area so the buds are a little crowded. Still looking for ways I can drop the humidity a bit.

Peace V

You can use a dehumidifier but they create heat. I try to use mine every other day and have good luck controlling the humidity. My room is in a basement and that has been an issue from the start. Once I hooked up a fresh air intake for the room (70 cfm) and air cooled my hood all was good. Temps stay between 72 - 79F and I keep the humidity at 60%.

I do have about 40 feet of dryer hose and a 70 cfm blower that I could use to blow in some fresh air from outside the room. I'll give that a shot when the light comes on later and report back the results.

When my camera comes back from manufacturer, I will post a few pics.

Thanks...

Whoa dude! Pay attention. That guy's talking about switching to air-cooled lights too. You hook up an active intake with what you have now and you'll be blowing stank all over the place.

Fuckin noobs.

My problem is immediate. I cannot just run out and buy special hoods. I need to fix it now.

Lets do a little math here:

I have a 265 cfm blower sucking air OUT of my room. I put a 70 cfm blower blowing air INTO my room.

Hmmmm........

My simple mind calculates 3.7857 times more air sucking OUT of the room than blowing IN to the room.

What accounts for the "stank out all over the place?"

Carbon filters are ineffective above 70% humidity. Period.

Your only solution is to really turn off one of the 1k lights. The more your room heats up the less water the air can hold, therefor you are basically added gas to the fire. I use a 8" vortex, sealed hoods and a 6k air-conditioner to cool my 2 - 1k lights. Looks like you are trying to do to much with not enough equipment.

Well, I fired up my 70 cfm blower in a cool area of the basement and have it pushing air into the growroom. The humidity was at about 65% when I checked it after 15 minutes and the temp was at 78 degrees. When I had been in the room 15 minutes earlier, the humidity was 70% and the temp about 85 degrees. Oddly, when I go into the room for a while, the temperature and humidity go up. I have heard of this happening but never seen til now. I will pop in at 5 AM tomorrow and see where the humidity and temperature are at and decide what I want to do. Im not going to turn off one of the lights.

upon initially checking the room tonight the humidity was at 63% and the temp was at 78 degrees, which I may be able to live with if forcing air in doesn't knock it down a little more.

I may just break down and get a 465 cfm blower if the humidity cant be controlled a little better. I have two fans circulating air in the room so I can live with a little humidity. We shall see what transpires tomorrow morning...

Well, just checked the room and the humidity was 56% and the temp was 80. Horay, it appears that piping some cooler air into the room did the trick.

70 going in and 265 going out seems to have effected the odor in the house. I smelled nothing at all when I got up, usually I can smell just a slight hint right before the lights go off. I suspect the better air flow in the room is helping vent it more efficiently and removing odor faster.
