the roots will be in the res before they are 2 weeks old anyway dude... The idea is to keep the sponge wet at all times and to keep the water flowing so it don't get staginate... Also, get you a fish tank pump and a aerator... Gives the plants roots O2 and helps keep the water in the res moving...

Do it how you want dude, im just trying to tell you what works...
I had mine set for herbs and after about a week and a half they started to wilt and look like shit. Once I set it for salad greens they perked right back up

In just two weeks my plants had 2 sets of leaves almost 3 rolls. I could have started flowering if i wanted to. Air and water is the way to go TRUST ME. Herb setting for growing and 12\12 for flowering
