Keep it as close as you can with out being too hot on the tops. But I also use a cool tube on my 400 watt mh and hps so I get it really close, almost touching if I want to. Keep it at 2 to 3 feet if not too hot to avoid stretching. I usually start my seedlings or clones under a flouro shop light until bigger before putting them under the 400watt.
