Where Do I Find the Trichs?

So I have a Radio Shack microscope and a plant that's six weeks into flowering(flowering time 7-11 weeks per breeder) and I look down on the pistils of the buds and see the "fury" looking structure but don't see trichs. When I pan over the green leafy parts of the buds I see what looks like little oily drops. Are these immature trichs that will eventually rise up and show a stalk?

I'm just not sure which portion of the bud shows trichs.

You know, the bud is mostly green leafy and white pistillate-like structure... A lot of descriptions of what to expect at flowering in seed breeder descriptions talks about calyxes and leaf to calyx ratios. I have no idea what they are talking about fwiw.

Buds arent the leafy parts. The calyx is the actual bud.The leaves tend to be between these and the parts filled in between are the buds and pistils. The trichs are the sugary looking stuff on the buds and close leaves. What you say looks like oild might be that as you will see raised drops under a scope that are either clear or milky.Heres a bud cured with trichs they look like sugar.

Should I expect the white pistils to show any trichs? I know not to look on the leaves close to the buds. But most buds have tiny green, leafy-like "things" intertwined(?) with the pistils. Is it on those green portions that the trichs tend to show up?

The little leaves your talking about in the calyx are refered to as foxtails as they look like mini foxtails. You can look at thgose. You ll aslo be looking for 70-75% red hairs in your buds to tell if they are done. This was is a little less persise.Anywhere you see the shiny little sugar crystals those are trick you look at those and when they turn from clear to milky mostly your done. The new avatr is that girl from disney Vanessa Hudgens who got in trouble cuz this photo to her boyfriend slipped out. Shes 18 but not what disney likes its actresses to have laying around but I for 1 love it mmmm naked hot girls....

So most strains have crystals and if I'm not seeing them I probably don't have trichs which means I'm not that close to harvest?

And, how long will a plant usually show crystals/trichs before it's close to harvest?

Can you please post a bigger picture of your avatar? :bigjoint:

Gonna depend on your plants. My plants pretty much start to show crystals first week into flower. All be it small and spaced all over the plants but by the time you see buds forming there should be crystals on the plant visible with just your eyes.More come with good nutes, good temps, good growing mediums and genetics.Dirt weed or seed from lower grade weed wont show as they usually have infereo gentics. Here is a bigger picture of my avatar

Well, right now on my biggest, most mature plant the bud pistils/hairs are still mostly white. So she can't be that close to ready, right? What I see as trichs so far don't seem that clear, more cloudy though but I know the plant can't be that close by the fact that the hairs are still mostly white. I'm just having trouble using that microscope so far. It's a very small field of view and you have to focus it as well as deal with the reverse imaging. Looks like I have some time.

Wow, that's some kind of love pad she's in.

Yes, the white hairs on the leaves are trichs. Under proper magnification, they'll look like a stalk with a ball on top of it.

I'm a moron with this Radio Shack microscope and still not getting good trich views. But maybe that's because trichs aren't really widespread yet? Right now my most mature plant has around 25% red hairs and even that just happened in the last few days. A week or two ago they were mostly all white. So isn't it normal for most plants to be at least 70% hairs/pistils turned color, usually reddish before the plant is ready anyway? The trichs don't show up in mass all that early on, do they?

Thanks.

thats odd normally theres a fair amount of trichs within a couple of weeks after 1st signs of pistils hhmm......maybe your strain blows up with crystals towards the end or maybe its not a big resin producer.post some pics of your plant if u can.peace

Two quick things I noticed with my girls were: 1) When I got my humidity in line the trichs got quite a bit larger, and 2) Two weeks or so before harvest they seemed to start enlarging again. Remember trichs serve a function or 2 for the plant so if you work within the parameters of those functions you can increase not only the size but the strength of the thc in the plant (up to a point). I'm outdoors and humidity is definitely starting to taper off. Nights and mornings have been cooler. I'm trying to get my hands on a scope I can use better than the Radio Shack model. Right now though my trichs appear cloudy although I am also checking them at night and limited to the light that is on the scope- don't know if that makes a difference in how well I see into the trichs. Maybe I'm not that far from harvest even though the breeder says I can go up to 11 weeks. It's been 7. Early on in flower I had some real problems with what appeared to be ph for a few weeks that went away when I gave the roots more room and soil. Maybe the earlier problems are pushing it to mature early? dunno. Anyway, perhaps I will see a difference in the next week or two since the heat has died down.

VH--Are you still having probs seeing the trichs? Cut a small piece off one of the bud leafs and take it into the house, put it on white paper and have at it with the RS scope. They are really the best way to determine if the buds are ready. GL HH
