horse manure works you need to mix with straw you need to make the spawn I used wild bird seed but its not the best and also popcorn,rye,millet and a few others you sterilize in a pressure cooker with some water let it cool put some spores in shake and leave in a warm place the mycelium grows shake a few more times to speed colonization takes 3-4 weeks
I used coco coir with some nutes for the substrate I copied somebody from shroomatopia.net I think its a forum but I used a aluminum oven sheet layed a thin layer of substrate then spawn like 2 quarts and some substate on top let it incubate 1-2 weeks put in fruit chamber like 1 week latter boom tray full of shrooms big shrooms I got over two zips off each tray and they whern't that big of trays you get a few flushes
You should go to one of the shroom forums they got every thing you need I liked shroomatopia.net best I may have spelt it wrong but they got recipes for every way to grow shrooms

Straw is a big contam vector and some prefer coco coir over straw.

I just mix what ever I have laying around, the most recent monotub I made consists of 8 cups coir, 4 cups verm, 4 cups straw, 4 cups store bought manure.

You could use that ratio and replace the straw and the store bought manure for horse shit and it would work out well.
But you would need a lot of PF cakes to spawn a monotub, like 12 1/2 pints or so.

Grain is used for bulk, if you have a PC you could start off with grain/bulk, if not you don't need a PC to grow from BRF cakes.
I've heard of people leaving the brown rice whole in the PF cakes, but I've only ground them.

It is better to grind your own brown rice the to buy pre ground BRF from the store.
