It helps to have that doctor know you for a while ... you want him/her to be confident you don't want them just as an intoxicant.

Then. You follow with an abrupt, "Yes, Doctor. Is that what you call it when you feel uptight and suffocated when in a big crowd?"

Turn the pages in his mind. And he'll believe you.

You convince them you have serious anxiety problem or you get panic attacks. Panic attacks are harder sell to the dr, but are more likely to get you Xanax specifically and at a higher starting dose, but you'll get fewer pills per month and if you keep going through like 10 pills a month your dr will get suspicious. An anxiety problem probably won't get a benzo right off the bat, you'll probably be given Buspar or an SSRI first and have to fail on one or two things before the doc will consider a benzo usually. It's a gradual process, and you have to carefully work the dr in the direction of giving you a benzo. And usually for anxiety Xanax is not the first benzo to be RXed. You're much more likely to get Valium or Klonopin first. And you wouldn't get bars right off even if you do get Xanax. You're lucky to get the 1mg ones as a starting dose, 0.5mg is much more common. Hell bars aren't normally the starting dose for panic attacks.
I can't stress enough how careful you need to be if you have a benzo Rx, benzo dependency sucks, the withdrawals are worse and THEY CAN KILL YOU!

Be judicious, "treat" yourself to a day of xanax lala land every friday or better yet every monday and don't ever depend upon them for anything including absolute intoxication and you will never have to worry about the bite but (Fish, I am talking over your shoulder - if you are warning someone about xanax they you surely have already been bitten and know what you are talking about) bite you they will and it is none too pleasant. I have heard people who would know claim that benzo withdrawal is tougher than opiat withdrawal - and longer as well.
