Went to Canada and drank my share of the green fairy. The traditional way to serve it is to pour it over a sugar cube, it comes out milky white not green. Tastes straight like licorice, worse than jager. Didn't do a thing to me, they said it used to make you hallucinate due to how it was made, had lead or something in it. Van Gogh cut off his ear supposedly because of absinthe, what most people don't disclose is he was also eating alot of paint chips around that time. Absinthe is all hype.

No, it's not all hype, it's just not sold anymore. What you get now isn't really absinthe, unless you go to remote parts of europe where it's traditionally been made for centuries. I got some from a village in France, made by this old dude whose family has made it for generations - it's pretty good. Aside from being about 70-80% alcohol, it contains a lot of wormwood, which is hallucinogenic if prepared correctly. You were nearly right charles, it is poured over a sugar cube on a spoon balanced over the glass, then it's set alight, you wait til the sugar caramelises then tip it in. You won't be able to get the real thing online sadly

absinthe is illegal almost everywear, the absinthe available in canada, and some part of europe, should not even be called absinthe, it is nothing like the original
you will never be able to get the original shit. you can get shit like it, but its wont make you halucinate, if it does you need to drink alot of it. its been illegal mfor like 80 years, so no original recipies exist, the people who continued to make it after it became illegal may have passed the recipie to other brewers, but the recipie has become distorted because of its lack of legalization anywear. having said that in america there has always been an absenth like drink, I forget what it was called... or did I chose not to remember because it sucked? either way its watered down, on top of not being very halucinigenic in the first place. |

Most of these posts are absolutely true. Any of the absinthe made in the EU is absolutely weak in terms of thujone. There are some Czech brands that are illegal for EU sale but they still make them for export, but even they are not so thujoney. The swiss and french ones can be a bit stronger, but quite a bit more expensive.
In reality, most good absinthe was never made with so much wormwood, anyways. I've drank SOOO much of it, and at best, all I got was a nice little buzz, besides a giant 70% alcohol drunk. Wormwood is the same as mugwort that people smoke as a weed substitute, although real mugwort is a slightly different species, alot of people use the A. absinthium. IMHO, for the price and body damage, absinthe sucks. Unless you're trying to be all goth and decadent-like. |
