The rice is just about taken over, but I had to cut off about maybe 20% of it due to contamination. It's not that that much was contaminated, just that I have to cut off a lot to make sure it's all gone. I was a bit too careless after the first week or two, and I made the mistake of turning on a fan in the room before i opened the top. This dish of rice will produce, in maybe a couple weeks.

NewGrowth - not sure, I never used syringes. If you can spread the spores out in the jar though, they will take it over faster, which means you can get mushrooms faster. Any amount of spores can colonize a jar, it's just a matter of how long they will take. But if you use my method, there is probably more likely to be contamination so you want the spores to act as quickly as possible. You can always make more spore prints after you get mushrooms just so you know.

Oh, and I would cut back on the water a bit too. Maybe 1/3 cup of water for every 1/4 cup of rice.

Thanks fro the tips! I picked up mason jars and rice. I'm going to poke two small holes in the lids like I saw in a video. This will allow me to inject the spore into the sterile media without removing the lids. I saw read they recommend 1cc of spore solution per 1/2 pint jar so I should get 10 jars out of my 10cc syringe. Now I'm just waiting for my spores to arrive in the mail. I'll let you know how it goes.

Oh, I forgot to add, I have a bag of dried Amanita muscaria mushrooms, but I'm kind of scared to eat them since I hear they can make you throw up. But I also heard that if you cook them, then they are not nauseating as much. Maybe sometime when I'm bored and don't have anything pressing for the next couple of days.

I ended up getting mushrooms from this technique, but by the time it was ready, the temperature was too low for proper mushroom formation. I didn't realize the mushrooms needed heat for quite a while, and by the time I finally put a heating pad under them, they'd been sitting there for quite a while. They did grow mushrooms though, and quite a lot of them. The only problem was mushrooms only grew from the edge of the cake, not the bottom, which was the part that was face up. A lot of mushrooms ended up growing from the edge of the cake, but they were very crowded and didn't get that big. This method worked, but I think that overall it was easier to use jars.
