there is a formula for each..... however I have no recolection of the formula, I think its like 1500 wats per sq/f... but again I'm really not sure, I'm sure its in the grow faq though

just googled it, most answers are saying minumum of 1,000 Lumens per sq/ft but you really want 1,500. and you can go up to 3,000... I'm sure you can probably use more than that

Check this out:

Things to know about lighting

it talks about a minimum of 3,000 lumens per square foot and a desired goal of around 10,000 per square foot. Wattage depends on the type of bulb you choose. CFLs get around 70 lumens per watt, while as hps gets around 107 lumens per watt. So for a one square foot peice of floor, you would need a minimum of 43 watts of CFL with a maximum desired 142 watts. With an hps, you would need a minimum of 28 watts, and a maximum of 93 watts, all per square foot.

There are many variables, so it is hard to make absolute statements. With any florescent it is best to add as many tubes as possible and spread them over the surface of the plant tops. That way each plant is getting some light. Also, keep the tubes as close to the plant tops as possible. If your room walls are a matte-white, you will have significant bounce-back lighting. Finally, as your plants get larger, you can add bottom lights facing the underside of the leaves and gain greater production results.
