    Question 250 Watt Hps Light

ok so im probably getting in over my head but i dont care. im getting ready to start my very first (of many) grow! i have a 250 watt metal halide hps light, foxfarm ocean forest soil (mixed with perlite for drainage) w foxfarm nutrients. i also bought some happyfrog bat shit and some neptunes fish and seaweed fertilizer. my grow space is 2'x 2'x 8'. im waiting for my seeds that i purchased from nirvana seeds. i got 5 feminized blackjack seeds. my questions are...how many plants can i grow with this space? is this a decent setup for this bud? help me out people!

Stevie: This is not as efficient as an "end for end / intake & exhaust" 250W Housing. But for your situation it would work (Check out pic). Basically you install an inline fan (100 - 165CFM) should do the trick. However this fan will be reversed. In other words it will suck the hot air from out of the light housing and you'll want to run a foot or two of ducting to blast it through the top of the cabinet. Remember that "hot air rises". And there will be a lot of heat coming off that deflector that wants to go no where but straight up. You'll also want to do a passive intake on the bottom of your cab, and also setup a carbon filter. Whether you chose to do a separate filter / fan combo or combine it with your light / vent / fan setup that is your call. If you do however do an "all in one" you may want to think about one of the more high end tornado fans. The inline's are about $35 - $45 bucks. The high end ones (They look like a turbo charger and use impellers) start at around $100.00. But compared to what (2) inline fans will cost you, plus less materials inside your cab it all evens out.

Here is the pic of the light I am talking about:

This is pretty shade tree (used pain program). But you'll get the jist of my idea on how I'd do the cooling. With this setup it'll take a bit of work, but you won't have to worry about stinking up your basement / closet or where ever your cab is located. The black line in the upper end of the cabinet between the light and the filter is a shelf. You can use that to hang the light, and will want to drill a number of good holes for ventilation. And of course a 6" hole to run the inline fan from the light through.

How were you planning to grow? Bushes, SCROG mini-SOG or what? You have 8 feet of height and a light with about 15 inches of penetration and width-wise one half decent sized bush would be like 4 pounds of baloney in a 2 pound skin in there.

    So what's your plan?

Mr. Ganja: Check out my post and both pics. The bottom pic is a shade tree setup I think might work for him. Or in your opinion would he just be better off with a 150W HPS?

Stevie: Here is one last idea (If you want to save a shit load of time and effort).

Ditch your 2 x 2 cabinet and for about $100 - $120 you can get a grow tent off eBay. They already come with good dimensions, have built in vent holes and velcro passive intakes with light blocking material. They're as turn key as you can get. Just a thought in case you're not a handy man!

The 250-watt will only have about 15 inches of light penetration, a 150-watt would have less. That's why I asked him if he planned on going SCROG or min-SOG (as in a small number of plants . maybe that should be called POD, pond of green instead of sea of green) and one half decent sized around/across plant would fill a 2' x 2' area.

The best thing he has going for him is the height and with a light with only 15 inches of penetration he can't use the height. He needs to grow low and grow small or else he needs to go up on wattage to something like a 400 with a sealed air cooled hood or a CoolTube so he can use the height he has to work with.

Put a grow tent in there ... and if you don't want to spend the money on one make one using PCV. Thick/heavy PCV strong enough to support lighting and any fans that might be needed, with all the fittings and connections, corners, 'Y's' 'T's' etc. that are available at any Lowes or Home Depot it makes one easy to assemble, just need a tape measure, a hack saw and the 'goo' to weld it with and use a double layer of poly (some call it panda poly) to close it in with .. it doubles as your sides, top and bottom and your reflective material.
