Hello. I am looking for a new light to veg my clones. I see a 8 bulb t5 fixture for sale for $130 on craigslist. Is the t5 light any good for vegging?

I want to go buy this from the guy. Will it work for me? My 1000 watt hps that I have is makeing my plants stretch I think.

Thanks everyone

If you want this long term, and it were me, I would be using an 8 bulb t5-ho fixture for veg, probably a 48". I would only get a fixture which had individual reflectors for each bulb. If that's the case, $130 is a very good deal, so if it's not trashed, I would snatch that up!

Personally I veg with a 14000 kelvin MH bulb. It's very blue/white. As you go down you will pick up more yellow, and at around 6500 kelvin you start to pick up a lot of red, 10000 kelvin is what looks closest to sunlight at my latitude to my eyes. Don't neglect the ability to mix and match bulbs to fine tune your light color :)

it's important to point out that a 48'' t5 setup (prob around 420 watts) is not going to hold a candle to a 1000 hps. however the answer is yes, it will work for veg and it do an excellent job, but the hps is much more intense even though the spectrum isn't ideal. i veg with a 48'' 6 tube t5ho fixture usually using 4 veg tubes and 2 bloom. does an awesome job but when i throw them under the hps and veg for 1 more week before flipping they really explode. i really can't rave enough about the t5 though. for the heat it puts out and the job it does in veg it's like a miracle, and the ability to mix spectrums is something that's pretty cool.

Ya man! I have a T5 48inch 6 bulb flour tube light fixture for my clones and mothers. It does such a great job. Not much heat at all and freaking puts out alot of light. They are great for vegging. Go for it and get it!

Some of my friends not only veg with t5's but bud as well. You don't get quite as much as with HID lights but... Personally, I like to veg with t8's & bud with 600 watt HPS. Heavy buds but that could be because I also use Open Sesame, Beastie Bloomz & Shooting Powder.

you definately can bud with the t5, but side lighting is critical. i used to bud with the t5 overhead and cfl and t5 for side light. i got poor results with the t5 alone.

I hang a single 18 inch T5 bulb that I put in an old florescent black light fixture over my clones/seedlings and it works amazing!
