Default Closet Grow Ventilation Suggestions
Im doing a nutrient film hydro setup in my closet. The space is about 2x5x7. Im using a 400W HPS light. I need to ventilate this space but i dont want to cut any holes in the ceiling. Is there any suggestions of how i could vent this? I've grow with CFLs in soil in the same space and it stunk up the whole house, so i need to do something about the smell too. Any suggestions please, THANKS

You could use some boxes and tin foil and make a tunnel and have it going out your nearest window.

Buy a cheap door and cut a whole in it for ventilation and change the nice door for the door with a hole in.

Or cut a whole in the nice door for ventilation, then when you finish use poly filler to fill the gap up and paint over and will look good as new

But you need to get fresh air in and expel the stale air. You need the unused CO2 in fresh air to continually enter the room

I grow in a closet as well right now. I simple open the bedroom doors which go outside (1st floor) and have the duct pipe blow lamp air inside the room. Seems OK. ABout 72-85 temps. It does smell up the place a bit. I usually air the place when i come home.

Building a proper grow closet now (4x5x7) and that'll vent lamp air from the top and plant air from the bottom to outside (hopefully this won't look too weird.

I use an open closet door for venting as well.

I use a 32oz. jar of ONA gel....placed in front of a stationary fan in the closet. Odors arent an issue.

U don't need both vents extracting. U just need the 1 at the top. Heat produced from the light will rise creating convection currents so all you need is the top vent and it will vent out the hot air that is riseing upwards. Have a vent at the bottom venting in to the grow room as this will be cooler air that will stay near the bottom until heated when it will rise upwards

Jimbo,

I've got a glass enclosed reflector so the lamp air is isolated and is vented out. So i'll need another exhaust for the ambient air. I got a 4" exhaust fan last night and will probably put it in the middle of the closet....perhaps you recommend it goes on top too? Then I'll have a regular fan blowing air from the outside and on the plants.

Here's a little sketch:

According to your sketch its not vented out. In order to 'vent it out' you need to have some new air to replace it. Put a seperate intake on the other side of the light. Now you have air movement and a cooler light. Maybe you have this and just forgot to show it.

Since hot air will rise it does make sense to give it a place to go. Don't piss in the wind, turn around.

With the addition of a line to draw cool air through your light you will have it right. VV

Victor,

I have a hole on top of the reflector so I think that it's enough, the one 4" exhaust fan sucks the air out of the reflector and that simultaneously sucks air into the reflector from the top hole. This is the way it was recommended in the reflector's manual and it was specifically noted not to put an intake fan, just an exhaust. Here's a little sketch again:

reflector op.JPG So then I just need to add the 2nd 4" fan to blow air from the top of the box like you recommended.
