i use an extension cord because i dont want to start a fire trying to wire shit myself as i dont know how. but i use a 12 gauge ext. cord and have it connected to a breaker in case of power surge and it works just fine but it is only ten feet not thirty. but the thicker the cord the more power it can transfer faster and easier.

Honestly, if you run thick enough gauge wire it's totally fine. At my shop we run some portable 220v miller welders off of 25' extension cords. Be it the cord is around 5/8 to 3/4" thick..

...and remember you can always go bigger gauge and it will be totally fine, you go to small of gauge you burn your house down. I would figure out how many amps your gonna be pulling before you go out and buy your cord.

#1 how many AMPs are you running?
is it two 220 plugs?
If so 6ga wire should be enough for you.
