due to location of my grow room i have to run an orange extension cord, plugged into a power strip(strip with 5 or so outlets) and plugged into the strip is my 1000 watt HPS ballast, running 1 1000 watt bulb. I think it will be cool to use, but wanted some help if anyone knows if this is 100% safe? please guys, i need help on this one, any and all comments welcomed. thanks to everyones comments in advance.

Kinda depends on the wire size inside the cord, and the cords' length.
I'd think you want at least #12 wire for 20amps, which would be easy to demand with a 5-slot power strip.
Wire size should be imprinted on the cords outer jacket.

As is, if you feel heat where the cord plugs into the wall, or the end where your strip is plugged into, you need to fix it. If no heat, you're probably ok.

You just have to make sure that both the power strip and the extension cord are rated for the amps the ballast will be pulling. I would go with 9 amp rated equipment. Should be fine otherwise

1000w draws alot of amps that kind of power can melt and burn up a small cord . make your you have the largest guage extension cord you can find esp. if you plan on running else off that cord. but it would be wise to have 2 cords. one for your light and other for fans etc.

thanks for all the help guys. as far as the cord and power strip goes, i am not sure what kind of amps they can pull, but i will check later tonight, but the extension cord is one of the thick orange ones, and the power strip looks good too, but i will only be running the 1000 watt lamp ballast, and 1 fan, but i`ll just check the amp recommended for the cord and power strip. thanks again! all the advice really helped.

Should be fine, as long as you dont overload the extention cord. Here in the UK, our extention cords can take about 3kW (3000W)

Edit: oops, sorry. Didnt realise there were already replies

in the uk an average extention lead can carry up to 13amps/aprox 3500w so aslong as you dont exceed that amont you should be fine. a 1000w ballast will run on about 4amps plus the bulb so around 1600w/approx 6.5amps and with the fan that will be max 200w so you should be absoloutly fine.
