Default In-line fans: Show them who is boss!
Ok, so I just got my room set up, and within 30 seconds that hi-pitched whistle from my in-line exhaust was driving me insane. So I played around with it, put pressure on it, nothing worked. So I took a piece of cardboard and used it to cover up the intake side of the fan by about 33%.As you slide the cardboard around over the intake you can tune it to the exact noise/whistle level you want .It cut the whistle down to nothing and I am very happy with the noise level. Luckily I bought more fan than I really needed( 250 cfm ) so giving up the 1/3 intake is no problem.

So if you want to tame that beast, try this out!If you have any other methods that work post them.

NICE! If I can save one person from going insane it was all worth it .

I don't know how you affixed the cardboard, the way mine is placed I just slapped it over the fan, tuned it to my liking, and then stapled both ends of the cardboard to the beams in my space. You could tape it , as the fans run cool on the can.

What is the brand name of these chincy in-line fans that you have? The ones I've seen are whisper-quiet and long-lasting.

I have never seen a " whisper quiet " in-line fan...at any price. They are meant to be up in your ducting which is why they make the noise in the first place.I don't know what kind of " miracle in-line " you have , but someting tells me it is not a true standard in-line . The fan I bought is a quality fan meant to last 15-25 years in a home....

Anyway , many folks have standard in-lines in their grow and this is just another way to fix the noise comes with these fans.

Nice idea there BT DT. If for some reason my little system fails in the future I will consider something like that.

Oh, I know the type you're talking about. Even Dayton squirrel cage fans are more quiet than those. The in-lines fans that I have that are quiet are Vortex and Fan-Tech.

Ahhh ok- I think I saw some of those at the local hydro shop. I may " trade-up " to those after i get 1 or 2 indoor grows under my belt.I hear ya.

I'm just using a plain old 40$ self-wired in-line.. Funny thing is, I put mylar up in my room, and cut a tight hole where the fan is, pushed it around the fan,and now it's silent ,no cardboard even...strange indeed.
