i remember seeing this in a video but cant recall which one it was... you do need to make sure the ph is stable... also make sure no bugs get in the water... as long as the water stays fresh and does not start sliming up or stinking then it is possible...

EDIT: if this barrell is hooked up to some water lines that water your plants then you will need to make sure the temp of the water is the right temperature... if your just bogarding this water so you can dip a bucket in it then dont worry about the temp.. as long as it stays around 70

You need an air stone, ph meter, heat pad (maybe)

good question... i don't know that i have the answer... butta... if you're just holding water in the rez's... you may not have to do much at all. I keep water in a 44 gallon rubbermaid trash can for a hand watered op... and i just throw a couple ounces of H2O2 in the barrel once a week. I also run it almost empty before filling back up again... and it is reverse osmosis... but tap water would probably keep even better.

now if you're going to be mixing up a nutrient solution in there and letting it sit for a week or longer... that's probably a whole nother ball of wax for a hydroponics person to answer. when i get around to mixing up solutions in the barrel, i'll be using the entire mix immediately... then refilling with pure water... until the next time i need the mix.

that is my idea right there!
have 2 maby 3 1 for veg 1 for bloom and 1 for clean water.
it really would save me a lot of time if i could set it up and not mess whith it.
it also could be a headach and maby i will only do clean water res and add nutes in waterjug. but i really like the idea of useing something like this http://www.bestnest.com/bestnest/RTProduct.asp?SKU=DRA-10-12623&src=nextag&kw=DRA-10-12623
maby i want a little much

again if you just want it so you can dip your watering can in there and have nutes on hand all you need to do is properly mix it, and keep it aerated.

i constantly have about 30 gallons of RO water on hand and all i do is keep an air stone at the bottom and it stays fresh and clean
