Default crazy idea
So I was lookin around and had this thought. I am kinda good with electronics and know how to hook up LED lights. I dont kno anything about the color scale on them or how many lumens they have but would it work to use tons of LED lights for a grow? Maybe make a rod or something to hold a bunch of them. Like I said tho i dont kno about the color scale but maybe some of them have different colors to them and you could mix and match colors to get the perfect light. Anyone know anything about this or if it would be a complete failure?

I believe 420-470 nM is the correct wavelength for vegging, don't know about for flowering.
LEDs shouldn't be used for flowering except as sidelights, they produce light, airy buds if used alone.

they sell those on ebay for about $25 per panel of 225 leds... they use some ratio or red and blue LEDs... i would let them veg a plant now, but i wouldnt want them to flower my buds... although some day I hope LED technology will be able to out perform HPS - it would kick ass to be able to get 8KW worth of light for $9 a month

LEDs can, technically, bud a plant, but the intensity of the light is very low, meaning it can't travel more than an inch or so effectively. The real world effect of this is that you would need hundreds, if not thousands of leds per plant, placed strategically aiming at the leaves and bud sites. These would require regular adjustment to account for plant growth, and the masses of effort involved just in doing this, nevermind the task of building such a lighting system, would surely negate the slight increase in efficiency that leds offer.
I speak from experience, my veg/clone setup is based entirely around a 600led droplight (kinda like a christmas tree ropelight, but with strings of clusters of leds branching off from the main wire) and it takes some looking after. I only have 2 mothers, and up to 6 cuttings/vegging plants at a time, but that's stretching it a bit and I have to reposition most of the leds every two days so that they still point at the leaves. I can only imagine how much time it would take to keep a full scale flowering op in check!
