Cut the carpet the fuck out of there. It's useless unless... when in the hell are you going to need carpet in your closet. Worse case, remove it and throw in a few square feet of hardwood flooring.

cover it with plastic. go up the walls a few inches with it. use one big piece. spill as much water as you want. just mop it up with a towel.

Buy a silver tarp, make a pond shape with it, and reflect some light up. A tarp is a lot better than plastic because it won't rip or puncture--so when you do get a spill--and you will--it will hold the water.

i used painters plastic the thicker kind its cheap and works great then u still carpet when ur done growing but definley go like 3 inches up on the wall cus hydro or soil there will some accidental overflows
those tubs for clothes that are low and ment to be stored under your bed are nice...and i've thought about this but haven't tried it yet, but a hard plastic kiddie pool, its a nice size and shape for round pots
