Default hps hood ducting
Hello out there,
I just bought a super sun hood by sunlight supply with the tempered glass and two 4" fittings for ducting. I'd like to run a 4" inline fan on the exhaust line and leave the other vent open.

Would it be more practical to have the fan mounted on the intake forcing air into the light and venting the exhaust with some ducting?

Will this be enough ventilation for a 400watt HPS?

Should I add another fan for intake as well as exhaust?

Thanks.

Fans Always go on the exhaust. If you have a conditioned space you can run an inlet from outside the space through the light and back outside, you will also need an intake and exaust for the room if you do this. If the fan on the light is going to be the primary exhaust and you have no need for A/C in the area then attach a duct to the intake on the light and place the other open end at the top of the enclosure to suck out rising heat. Your Intake should be down as low as you can get it, and preferably have a filter on it.

You want to suck the air from the light, and blow it away from the light.

and yes, that would be perfect for a 400w hps.

Default I have 2 super sun hoods....
with 1000w lights. i bought 1 4" 170cfm fan w/ carbon filter from htgsupply.com . it cools both lights nicely. i have 1 side open to room air to help with exhaust. And yes, pull air through the light and push it out through the filter if your worried about smell. i made a box to hold filters and to close off window to any light leaks, box is vented out to the outside. here a couple pics of filter box if it helps. my room has A/C coming in , with 2 exhaust fans plus the fan for the light moving hot air out of the room actually, 2 rooms(veg&bud). outside<filter<fan<light< open to room( i put some screen on mine to keep any flies from being sucked in). <<< is direction of airflow. hope this helps. And Yes , a 4" is plenty if you run it right. my room is staying about 73f. 77f under the light. 2nd pic actually shows bud room light with ducting coming from veg room light, this didnt work, bud light was getting hot air blown through it, NO GOOD. the 4th picture shows the veg room with 1 month old babies and light open to room on 1 side, bud room is open on 1 side now also. i installed a "Y" on the fan housing and ran seperate ducts to each light.

Cool Thanks
thanks jorda, appreciate the compliment. it didnt take too long. i made a template of a 4x8 sheet of particle board. designed the box, figured out how may pieces it would be. fit the pieces of the box in the template to see if was going to have enough wood with just 1 sheet, i was. i went to home depot with my template. they have a very nice machine there for cutting large sheets like that with nice straight edges. HD cut the sheet down how i asked for it, 14 cuts 15 pieces( they sometimes charge for extra cuts but as long as you are patient and polite, they never charged me).I did explain first that i wanted to buy, but couldnt if it wasn't cut. All i had to do was come home and screw it together. place it in the window frame and its light tight and bug tight from the outside. the nieghbos next door have dogs that poop right by my fence so i dont know if i needed the carbon filters(LOL) but i figured id better anyway. hey maybe i'll start using it for compost, ewwwwwwwww.
