So I'm guessing from what I've read here that the 105 w coolwhite cfl that I've now got should be ideal for veging and budding when I drop the light to 12/12

i think you may be off somewhat...
veg spec 6200-6500k is ideal. anything else is realy the wrong color...this spec in veg encourages more females.
flower spec 2300-3000k is ideal. this spec also works for veg, but increases your chances of males.
these are the color bands that cannabis responds to.

Yeah from what I can understand florescent have the most PAR or usable light for the plants which translates into a better power to grow ratio in theory. And I do have several 23 w cfl at 2300 k which I can throw in there for flowering if I can only get hold of a y adaptor. Ideally if I could get hold of a cupboard about the right dimensions then I could wire it up, but I'm growing in a built in closet in a rented flat so I'm limited as to what wiring I can do. And trying to find specs for a 105 w coolwhite compact florescent is really hard so I will be monitoring things closely and posting updates.

Learning How To Roll
Learning How To Roll
Timer
You need to get yourself a good timer and switch your light to stay on for 18hrs and off for 6hrs you will need to change this later on to 12/12 when you get to the flowring stage . Just on my first grow myself plants at about the same stage as yours . Do check the timer make sure its compatable with your light not all are !!!!

3000k will do. that's what the majority of household cfl's are.
what you read about sensitivity is partly true; it has to do with a plant's addaptation to season change.
you can go 12 12 with cool spec, less bud, tighter nugs...in the fall, there is more red/orange than there is in late spring/summer.

Hey there Whambam. Yeah thanks already got a timer and running 17/7 because it's in my bedroom closet and when it switches there is quite a click which can wake me, also even though I've lined half the closet there is still some light leakage into my room so got the timer to suit my sleep pattern off at midnight and on at 7am.
Gosh the 105 really puts out the light and feels like the sun on my skin when I open the closet and my baby is really putting out leaf and bushing out now.
What's your set up like?

are you flowering with cfls?
if so, might i suggest you flower now, as the bigger they get at this point, the more stretch you'll have to deal with, and the more cfl's you'll need. gk is an advocate of five node flower for cfls.
