I absolutely love this cab (considering I've moved down from a 1000w light just in the middle of the basement.)
Is it worth it? It was for me, because I don't have the time nor the inclination to figure out how to make one (as well as do a good job of it). I'd rather pay for someone to do it. I am well aware that the parts probably came up to less than $1k, but I'm happy to pay an extra $1k for their R&D.
This is my first grow in the shed. My 1k ballast blew (6 yrs old) so I had just vegged out these plants under a $9 400 MH bulb. The Juicy Fruit was too tall by the time the cab arrived despite me topping her, once, twice, three times to keep her height down. (The Bushmaster sure didn't make a fart of a difference).
Right now I have 5 plants in the cab.
1 x Juicy Fruit which is in a 3 gallon (?) pot, then I have
2 x American Dream in 1/2 gallon 7/11 cups and
2 x American Dream in 1.5 gallon (or is it one gallon) pots
I'm currently testing betwen which is a better pot to use in the cab. I think the 1/2 gallon cups are a bit of a waste, as the plant has ended up taking just about the same size footprint. So a bigger pot would have been better.
I'm hoping of pulling in at least 4oz with this grow. I thin the Juicy Fruit should yeild me well over 2 oz (I'm hoping more like 3+) and if I just calculate for an 1/2oz for the smaller plants (hopefully I'll get more like an oz from the ones in the bigger pots). I think by the time I get the cab and pot size dialed in I hope to pull in at least 6oz a grow.
The cab was supposed to come with the 400w system, so I bought myself a nice 400w Horti Eye bulb and when I came to install it I noticed that the bulb that came out said 600w. I called up Sunlight sheds and they said that they had run out of 400w so had upgraded everyone's with 600.
I wish they had told me before I spent $70 on a bulb that is now useless to me. I'm planning on buying a nice 600w bulb when I get some more $$'s.
The only problem with the cab I can see is running out of height, ideally I'd like to take out the top shelf and move the light up to the top, but then I wouldn't have my nursery area. There's only 5' high of flowering space, if your pot is over 12" high and you need 12" of space from your light that only gives you 3' of plant space. So if I can' move down to 7" high pots, that'll give me 5" more of space.
The next couple of grows will all be a learning experience with the cab, till I get it fine tuned to what works the best.
Attached is a pic, you can see the different sized pots (and heights) that the plants are. This was not a very well organized grow in terms of timing lol.
And the best thing for me with this cab is NO SMELL!!! Man, my house used to get really stinky as I was growing right next to the furnace/air return and it was pumping the house with sweet odors.
