Welcome to Silk's hot pepper grow journal!
In this grow I will be raising jalapeños, orange habaneros and bih jolokia (the world's "hottest pepper <-more on this later). I need to start off by thanking OpenDNS and Kant for inspiring this journal. I will start by posting your basic steps to growing peppers each day. When these steps are completed I will then be updating the journal weekly or when people show interest. Feel free to comment, go off on tangents or create polls about people's opinion of you. I invite wise cracks, constructive criticism and straight tomfoolery and douchebagery , just be funny you hear? ;0 Ready? Step 1: Get some seeds! There are many ways to get seeds. I went to Buy Bhut Jolokia Chilli Seeds, the hottest chilli in the world! simply because they have the fire! If you are state side you can also order the fire from NMSU: Chile Pepper Institute Chile Shop If fire isn't your choice that's alright, you can still follow this guide to raise some peppers. Finding seeds is easy; you can go to your local garden center, farmer or dry your own from the grocery store product or out of your garden. I ordered the fire and got some extras... |

Step 2: Germination I use the power towel method which you might be familiar with if you have raise marijuana before. Keep in mind that pepper seeds differ from MJ seeds. There is no protective shell ot the seed itself. In the wild the pepper falls to the grow and roots into the ground or an animal eats the pepper and shits out the seed elsewhere.
If you are unfamiliar with the paper towel method more detailed instructions are here: http://www.rollitup.org/view.php?pg=...article&id=602 I use plastic bags (instead of plates) which are not sealed so the water can slowly evaporate. Germination times are approximately the same as MJ seeds, I'd expect these to be planted by the end of the week and I won't bother to check them for a few days. See you in a few days and remember: keep on growing! |

Alrighty then, I planted the Bih Jolokia today. In the first picture you can see the germination. It looks like something is growing from the seed. This is like your taproot from an mj seed. You could let this go until it's a half inch or inch long, but I have not found it necessary. Essentially the germination process with pepper seeds is to just test viability. I could have just planted them...
In the second picture I am showing you that I have planted 5 seeds in a 5 gallon container. The lighters indicated the approximate placement of the seeds- if you can't see the seeds yourself ( I know I have trouble seeing them in the pic...). I have place the 2 5 gallon pots in my flower room. The soil like mix is recycled Miracle Gro potting mix. I will discuss more about the grow technique, peppers and trouts later... |
