Hey RIU,
I'm a medical marijuana patient in California who has embarked on my 1st grow after reading A LOT on the subject. I'm trying to be as organic as possible.
Thought its time to start my grow journal. I haven't had time to start until now so my babies are a bit far along on their journey to bud but I have pictures that I will post from seedling until now which would be the middle of 5th week of vegetative cycle.
I began keeping a written log on February 11th, 2010, when my first seeds began to break ground.
I started my grow from bagseed that I have collected over the past couple years. I only kept the seeds from the dankest bags so I have a feeling my kids are going to be mid-grade to high-grade strains.
MEDIUM: A friend of mine has a compost that has been marinating for the past 20 years, I took a few buckets of their composted soil for my grow. I started with a mixture of 1/2 organic Happy Frog soil and 1/2 friend's compost. I put the medium in 2 party cups and a 10" pot I found in my garage that I sterilized before using. I germinated 7 seeds but only 3 became seedlings. I have a feeling the other 4 were unsuited for the environment I have here.
Oh right, the ENVIRONMENT: I am currently growing indoors as my backyard is visible to a main road in my town, otherwise, I'd be growing there. I live in Northern California, the Bay Area so my region is best suited for a Indica leaning strain. I do believe that is what I have growing. I've been growing in my closet since seedling stage and plan to continue until flowering. I know that the plants do grow another 1/3-1/2 during the flowering phase and my closet would be too cramped for that. You can see from the pictures that its getting a tiny cramped now, although I'm going to give them another 2 weeks in the closet before moving them to the flowering room.
REFLECTIVITY: The closet is covered with 2mm Mylar sheets that go around 4 faces of the cube in which I am growing. The other 2 faces are covered with white particle board and white sheets that I can remove to get in there.
AIR CIRCULATION: I have 2 fans, 1 stationary fan facing directly into the grow cube and 1 moving fan that circulates the air around the closet and room. I leave the closet doors (which are mirrors that slide) slightly ajar on both sides to let air circulate better. I also let the window of the room where the closet is slightly open so old air can escape and new air can come in.
LIGHTS: Inside the closet, I have 6 differnt CFL's. I have 2 65w 4100k CFL's that generate 300w each and 3,800 Lumens each. I have 2 Daylight 40w CFL's that generate 150w each and 2,700 Lumens each. And 2 23w 2,700k CFL's that generate 100w each and 1,650 Lumens each.
Total Lumens= 16,300 Lumens...I've read that above 15,000 lumens should be good enough for growing Cannabis
NAMES: The first to sprout from soil was one that I named Syd, short for Sydney. The second I named Fedora because the little thing still had its seed perched on top of it's first leaf like a hat . The last I called GG because I used a small amount of my Grandfather's Garden homemade fertilizer in the soil mixture as well as the 10" pot that I found out later was his. Syd and Fedora were both growing in party cups.
STRAIN SPECULATION: I had a radiator on in the room for a while during the beginning because it was still winter then and cold but because my electricity bill went up by a LOT, I decided to stop that after the first 2 weeks of veg. I noticed that Syd was flourishing nicely in the radiated environment. After the first day without the radiator though, GG and Fedora went through growth spurts while Syd only grew a little. I think this shows that Syd is probably a more tropical plant, so leaning towards Sativa, while GG and Fedora are probably leaning more on the Indica side.
WATER: Luckily for me, the town I live in has a set pH of 7 for tap water. At first, I added a little pH down to make it about pH 6.7 but since week 2 of veg, I've been getting more towards pH 7 water. I let the tap water sit out for 2-3 days before I give it to my plants so to let the chlorine evaporate. I do foliar spraying with a fine mist sprayer but I haven't begun foliar feeding at all. I'm still unsure if I want to do that.
Okay, I'm going to post some beginning pictures and then update with more recent pictures later. The pictures I am posting now are from mid February, seedling stage
Nice start, DO you plan on moving them under an HID eventually?
Thanks for the reply!
I unfortunately don't have the proper set up for a HID because my flowering room will be a box that I'm afraid might make a flammable situation, but I am planning on CFL's up and down the length of my plants, as best as I can.
I'm hoping this will work because I'll be around my plants multiple times a day so I'll be able to adjust the lights with growth. I hear this is a pain but I love my girls and I'm willing to do this. Although, with the LST I've started, I could just have a canopy lighting set up
UPDATE:
These pictures are from earlier this week, March 22nd which was the beginning of their 5th week of veg!
I only FIMmed the biggest one of my three plants (GG) as it was the first time I've ever done it and I've heard that usually, the larger plants turn out male.
4th picture there is of Sydney who now has 11 blades per leaf!
5th picture: Fedora who has 11 blades per leaf as well as a slight shade of blue on the outer trim of the blades of leaves. (I hope this means fruity smells!)
Last one: you can see the 1/2 green 1/2 red or purple shade to the top and bottom of the leaf stem on GG. I'm hoping this means that this is a sativa/indica hybrid mix
I really hope all are females because even though I don't have room for 3 mature female plants, I do have a friend who is also a medical cannabis patient who would be able to grow 1 of my babies if all 3 turned out female. Unlikely, but hopefully!
Correct me if I'm wrong but enjoy the pictures!
Thanks everyone!!
