Happy New Year Everyone!

My New Year is not so happy because I was planning on going out and having tons of fun with my friends. But instead, I ended up severely injuring my neck. So here I sit, bowl in hand, hoping to have fun even if I can't go out. But it is happy for me in a different way; 4 out of 7 of my White Russians sprouted today!! :weed:

This is my first grow journal, but the 6th crop I've started from seed/clone. This is also my first time growing White Russian, so I'm really excited about that. After talking to a couple people on RIU, we've decided it's most likely the Serious Seeds strain, but I don't know for sure.

A little back-story:
These seeds were given to me by someone who's in the middle of foreclosure/moving. So he won't be able to grow for a minimum of 6 more months. He gave me the seeds to grow for him. Anyhow, he ordered the seeds from a site that only carries the Serious Seeds and Sagarmatha versions of White Russian, but he ordered White Satin and received White Russian instead (the piece of plastic they shipped it in only said White Russian--no breeder name). When I checked the website, even though they carried Sagarmatha, they didn't have it listed. So I'm hoping these are SS and not some old Sagarmatha's that used to be listed and now they're getting rid of whenever they're out of the similar strain that was ordered. If someone has some more insight to this, or a better opinion, please let me know. I'm very curious to find out exactly what I have.

My setup:
1 closet; 3 sections. Total closet size is 11L x 3W x 9H. Veg section is roughly 3.5L x 3W x 6H. Flower section is about 4.5L x 3W x 9H. The rest of the closet is my storage area.

The veg room uses a 250w MH. I got a new fan for air circulation today, which I haven't setup yet because of my injury. And I'm currently trying to get a better exhausting fan, but that will come later.

The flowering room has a 400w MH with the same type of exhaust fan as the veg room. I'll be temporarily upgrading to HPS, but I can't remember if it's 400w or 600w. It belongs to the person who gave me the seeds, but he hid the light because of the realtor coming through. So he has to find it before giving it to me. I'm not as worried about this room with heat because I keep the closet door open. That may have to change now because I'm not sure of the odor level of the White Russian.

I will be making the DIY carbon air filter that's featured/recommended to help with that, and I'll be trying to find a small portable A/C to reduce the temp in the closet (which now averages 85f with all the doors open)

My main focus now is switching the soil. I was using MG Moisture Control before at the recommendation of someone (not on this site) a while back. After reading some more on this forum, I've found a retailer that sells Fox Farm and will be switching to that as soon as my injury heals and the place opens back up after the holiday. Right now, I'm nute-free because of a bad experience on my first grow. Now that I've got the hang of growing, I will introduce nutes again with the Russians using the Fox Farm nutes.

As far as the pix below. Some pix are of my setup. The plants, you will notice, I name. They are named in alphabetical order from whichever sprouts first. Since I've named a bunch of seedlings before with my White Satins, the first one that sprouted with the Russians was Godiva, then Hazel, then Iris, then Jem. I have 3 more seeds germinating still. Anyway, I keep a "family tree" of sorts for the ladies. I only give girl-names and when I clone from the mothers, I give the clones a girl's name starting with the same letter as the mom, e.g. Betsy was the "B" seed. The clones she yielded were Beverly, Beth, Becky, Bonnie, Badu, Bree, and many more. Anyhow, I just do this because it's easier for me to note which problems I had with a specific plant and it's also helped me weed out the seeds/clones with the inferior phenos within the strain.

Anything else you want to know, please ask. Comments and concerns are encouraged and appreciated. Feel free to use their names when commenting since that will probably be easier on all of us.

Pix attached are:
1. The new babies 4 of 7 (these aren't fem, so we'll see how many last)
2. All 7
3. Godiva
4. Iris
5. Hazel
6. Jem
7. I noticed Godiva (who actually sprouted very late last night) looks a bit stretchy, so I took this pic to show how far the light is. 9.5in from the top of the cup to the bottom of the light
8. 400w MH in Flowering
9. 250w MH in Veg (my ex hooked this up. Does it look dangerous to anyone else, or is it just me?)
10. 1 of 2 similar exhaust fans
11. View of flowering and veg rooms from the storage side of the closet

*note*
All the big plants in the pix are the white satin, which won't be included in this journal.

Thanks. No problem on interrupting the journal. Not much to talk about right now anyway.

Yeah, it suxx really bad. I went to the chiropractor yesterday and today and it just keeps getting worse. My neck is so stiff right now that I feel like I have a wooden board screwed into my spine. The only pain relief I'm getting at all is from Ben Gay and weed! :weed:

But seriously, it's so bad I'm contemplating going to the emergency room for muscle relaxers since my chiro can't prescribe and my doctor won't be open until Monday. I can't even lay down. I've been sleeping sitting up the past two nights.

Thanks, I'm feeling a bit better today. I just set myself on the couch, smoked a bunch and watched about 7 episodes of Lost on Netflix since I couldn't really move at all.

The White Satins have been flowering for 3-4 weeks. Pic #11 is the only pic that shows the flowering section. The closest one to the camera (Bree) has been budding for 3 weeks, the one behind it (Emily) has been budding for 4 weeks.

I've thought about switching to HPS. I would REALLY love to, but I would have to get a new ballast as well. I don't really have the money for it now since my priorities are to change the soil, get nutes, fix my exhaust system, buy a small a/c to cool the temp down in there, and build the DIY carbon filter. Eventually, I'm getting a loaner HPS that I'll use til I have the money to buy my own. Then, I'll stick the 400w MH into the veg room. 8) But, yeah, right now upgrading for me is in baby steps. I'll be doing all my upgrades during the White Russian grow because I really want this stuff to be as good as possible. I wasn't really impressed with the White Satin, and from what I read I thought it would be great. So I'm taking that as a big hint that I need to make a lot of adjustments.

No better way to cure an injury :leaf:
Shame about the satins what went wrong there then?
Yea hps would be better but if cash is the issue its just 1 of them. that 400mh would go well for a veg light!
Just to say also you can pick up a decent 250w hps for a reasonable price here http://www.growell.co.uk/p/1085/Budget-Hobby-Light-Systems.html, i take it you live in the states? not sure of shipping costs there.

Well, the money issue only keeps me from getting everything at once :) So I'm just getting little-by-little every paycheck. The only reason I'm waiting til last for the light is because I already have lights that work well enough to get the job done. The other stuff (soil, air filter, air conditioning) are priorities because upgrading, I feel, is necessary for those. Soil because I was using MG and I'm thinking that may be the root of my problem (no pun intended ) as to why the plant ad buds come out looking kinda fried (PH is like 7.0-7.5 with that soil). The air filter I need because even my stealthy white satins manage to stink up my apartment, and I'm not sure how these white russians will smell--not ready to risk it. The air conditioning is not a major issue, so it'll be last before the lights. But I live in a hot area and my average closet temp is 85f-87f right now during winter and during summer the closet was ranging between 93f-95f. The temp killed all but 1 of my plants, so I need to fix that first before it starts warming up again. And where I live, the temperature outside won't drop below 75f from March til November. So I just wanna find a fix now. No sense in waiting til the last minute when know I can lose everything because of it. So, lights will come after that. My ex is an electrician, so he gets good prices on all that sort of stuff. But, yes, I live in the States (unfortunately). I'm not sure what exactly went wrong with the satins. My first guess is the soil, second guess is the temp. But they are supposed to do well in hotter climates, so I'm not sure about that. Aside from those two things, I was thinking it's lack of nutes or less-than-optimal lighting. All these breeders obviously grow their plants under the best conditions. I just have the MHs and wasn't using nutes, so I'm sure that will lessen the outcome from the breeder description. So I'm introducing the nutes now and I'll definitely have an HPS in the bloom room by the time the Russians are ready to flower 8)

Here is a sneak peak of whats coming...these are my white russian:leaf: ladies I just flipped
Those look so nice! Thanks for sharing the pix. What in the world is making them look purple? I'd guess light but there seems to be one well under the canopy that looks purple. Maybe you dropped your camera at some point? I dropped mine last summer and it takes pictures with some purple in it too, just like that. But they look amazing, nice and bushy. And nice fat indica leaves. Mmmmm... can't wait!!

The purple is a ufo led, also a 200 w CFL and a 600 HPS... 15 plants... moved 6 of them out of tent under a seperate 600 W HPS. :leaf::leaf:Grow is going much better than last... almost a week ahead. Vegged 24 days when seedlings transplanted....:weed:

Today, I got my Fox Farm Ocean Forest Soil, FF Big Bloom, FF Grow Big, and FF Tiger Bloom. Also got soil and water PH test kits, and everything I need for my DIY air filter.

Gonna go run my little tests now and see how the soil and water I've been using rate. And I'll take a couple quick pix too.

ETA: I will start the new soil when the seedlings are big enough to transplant and will start the nutes afterward according to Fox Farm's feeding schedule.

Here are some pix from tonight. They're all getting a bit stretched--especially Godiva. Is there anything that would cause this other than the lights being too far? I never had this happen before and these babies are actually closer to the light than any other strain I've had.

Had to wait on my soil test because I have to let the soil dry. But, I did the water PH test and *OMG*!!!!! The highest the test would read at was 7.2 and I went through 2 rounds of adding PH Down before I even saw a change! Took a total of 12 drops to get to 6.5! My poor plants, I'm definitely counting that as another possible culprit to degrading the White Satins.

ETA: As of right now, the other 3 seeds still haven't sprouted

Were those pix taken at 24 days? Of after you switched to flower? They look amazing! Can't wait to see them finish :joint: Did your Russians have the same stretching characteristics as mine by any chance (is it normal for the strain)?

Thank you muchly...Those pictures were 24 days after planting clone seedlings in 5 gal pots....about 2/3s the size of a party cup when moved with 3 leaf sets...

It is way to early to worry about stretch on your babies... they will bush out if the are truly white russians... they grow so different from the chronics that I grew.... and the feedback on the smoke is amazing.... just be careful not to overfertilize... they are a very hardy plant that bushes out nicley and denses up...

Hey man, yeh no worries about the stretching now if they are still stretched by the time they need transplanting just plant them that bit father down into the soil. just a quicky the russains arnt in with the flowering satins are they?
Everything sounds good otherwise nice setup looking forward to this keep us updated!!

Someone recently told me the stretch could be caused by watering too often while it's growing. Is that true? I mean, they've only been sprouting for 3 days so far, I've only watered them once. But I do spray the leaves with seltzer. I did read somewhere before to not worry about stretching until the seedlings get 2-3 nodes. But I guess I'm just worried because I haven't seen this in the other 3 strains I've grown.

Thanks for the info on the overfertilizing. I was going to start doing nutes on these when they're ready, so I'll be extra careful. I was going to be cautious anyway because I overfertilized on my first grow and messed them up. Don't want to make that mistake again! So do normal feeding schedules go OK with this strain or do you think I should back it up a bit and feed every 2 waterings?

Cool. I feel better about the stretching, then. My ex-boyfriend came over today to help me with some electrical and also to carry up the soil for me so I don't make my neck worse. I had him add some soil to the top of the seedlings to help support them (especially Godiva looks like "she" was about to topple over). Anyway, he was being a clumsy dumbass as usual and broke Hazel in half! I propped her up with some toothpicks and am crossing my fingers. This has happened to 2 of my plants in the past, and they recovered as if nothing happened. But I'm worried about this one since "she" is so young.

Anyway, gripe aside; no the Russians are separate from the flowering satins. They're in the same closet, but I separate them with black visqueen that has no light leaking. And I'll definitely keep this updated 8) Thinking about doing pix just once a week, but I will update, verbally, as often as anything happens that's notable ;)

Here are some new pix of the week-old babies. Adding the soil to the cup really helped support them. They are no longer falling over. I moved them away from the light about 1-foot because I wasn't comfortable with my stacking abilities and was worried they would fall over when I wasn't home. And, this is ironic, but since I moved them away from the light, they've stopped stretching. They look like normal plants now, and that makes me happy ^_^

Anyhow, that's really all there is to report for now.

Thats strange as whenever i bring the light closer to my plants it helps out with any stretching its when the light is too far away they are more likely to stretch.
I'd keep your eye on 'godiva' as it is looking rather stretched.
Looking good otherwise!!

The Russians are really taking off now. Almost 2 weeks old and they have 4 three-fingered leaves. They look amazing ^_^

I can take some pix on Friday. I'm afraid I'm too busy to take any earlier than that. But if I find the time then I'll post them before then.
