1000 Watt HPS, 2nd Grow

This is my second grow ever! Link to my first journal is in my signature for now.

Germination will start on January 24

Like before, I will be growing 6 plants. This will be:
2 x Afghan Kush Ryder
1 x Easy Ryder (AKxLR2)
2 x Sour Cream
1 x L.A. Confidential

The plan is to start all of them at the same time, let them go on 20/4 for 7-8 weeks, then switch to 12/12

I will be testing the effects of switching to less light late in the autoflowering stage (week 7 or 8). My theory is that buds form at night, so in this late stage the plant has enough energy but not enough bud forming time. I've discussed this idea here, but no one could offer any help, so I decided to try it for myself. The other reason I am trying this is I can't veg for much longer than 8 weeks or I will outgrow my 6'7 tent.

The 2 non-Auto strains aren't feminized, so this is a gamble, but I figure one in 3 must be female, an after an 8 week veg AND 3 early plants, that will be enough weed for me to smoke. 'specially after my last harvest of 8 ounces!

So, stick around y'all, this is the new grow journal, and it will be starting on January 24

Glad to see you here! Its 3 AFs and 3 normals.

I've heard of the tortilla trick, but personally Im going to use a wetted q-tip, taped to the underside of the jar lid

For the sake of completeness, im gunna do all of the talk about q-tips and stuff for the other crop on the first grow's page.

For now I'm sticking with one room and just messing with the light cycle. After 2 years or so I will probably upgrade my facility. Right now I'm trying to learn the basics and get comfortable with the plants.

With that said,

Germination!

First I wet 5 paper towels, 1 for each strain

Then I placed the seeds in each paper towel a rolled them up, then used tape to identify and to hold them together.

Like last time, blue is Afghan Kush Ryder (2 seeds) and gray is Easy Ryder II X AK-47 (1). Tan is LA Woman (2), gray/blue is LA confidential (1). I also found a seed in some BlueberryXG-13 Haze (aka G-Berry) , so theres one of that in the blue X.

Then I rolled them all up, put them in a bowl, sprinkled just a tiny bit of water on them with my hand, and covered with plastic wrap.

Then I covered it with a plate to block light, and stuck it a couple feet from a heater, so it stays at about 64-68 degrees.

Yesterday all but the LA conf. had germinated, so I planted them.

This time I put some newspaper at the bottom of the pots to prevent soil from running out. Lots of dirt in my bathtub last time. That brings me to a 2nd point but I'll get to that in a minute.

First, a picture of the set up

The auto-flowering strains were planted directly in to 3 gallons of soil. To plant I like to pinch the seed, use my fingers back and forth to dig a small, .5-1 inch deep hole, plant the seed with white tail down, then losely cover back up with soil. no water for the first week

The non-auto flowering strains have been placed in smaller containers. At the 3 week mark I will subject them to 2 days of 12/12, then switch back to my 20/4 light cycle. After they sex I'll destroy the males and replant the females in 3 gallons.

Now, what I wanted to say before, about the bathtub. A lot of growers i know or have seen, including myself, pick up the plants and water them in a separate room. others reposition their plants for better light or when they're watering. Point is, time lapse video has PROVEN that if you move the plant then it takes a little time to recover. The more the plant is moved, the longer it takes. this stunts the plant's size and quality.
I'm going to be avoiding this by purchasing a water pump (probably manual) and some sort of cheap tub, plus a water basin with a latch (like those coolers with the drink nozzle) and a tube. I'll fill the basin with my water or water/nutrient mix, and then tube it down via gravity to the plants, which are sitting in the tub. then I'll pump excess water out of the tub and to a container, which i'll then empty as I normally do. This way I don't have to move the plants to water them.

Day 6 and only 2 are showing signs, one of the AKRs and the G berry.

I couldn't find my trusty old CFLs, so instead of tear my place apart looking for them i put the HPS about 3.5 feet above them (this is back at day 1). Well only 2 have sprouted so far, i'm worried i fried them. Moved the light a bit back, and put all the plants to the outer side. Gave the smaller ones some shade. I also lightly sprinkled water to rehydrate the soil a little.

Update on Day 7

G berry has sprung up but is still wearing its seed for a hat; no leaves yet. We'll see.

Wellll one of the autos is doin okay, the g-berry may be salvagable, but I dunno if between the two of them if I want to do the time damage on my light, slash run the risk of getting caught and anally fucked. Still I could prolly get 2-3 ounces out of the two of them.

I watered them all today just to see.

I MAY be able to obtain some clones, we'll see bout that but I'm tryin.

Til next time, fellow rollitos

Day 22
today is #22. By the way y'all, I'm updating this every time I water. Or every time I water I update this. by "update this" i mean i post pictures and progress, not just responding. ANYways the AKR is goin strong. Here are two pictures from days 19 and 21 of my last batch:

Compare those with the last attached picture. It looks like it is on track. Today I also added 1/4 strength VEG nutrients. Last time by now I had added one 1/4 and one 1/2 strength dose.

no problem brother, if we were closer, you better believe, id have 30 clones for you! yeah it does look like your on track, all you need is one good female plant, to keep as a mother, you have the skills to keep her going. i have 100% success with my clones, as a noob, so any help you need, i really consider myself an expert, now do you have a closet to keep a moter or two? either way looking great!

Sorry that this is incomplete.. I had to leave town for a week and when I came back most of the plants were dead.

This was obviously a long time ago, and I didn't post my grows since then. Sorry RIU community!

I will be posting again in the future, maybe this summer or a little after!
