Default My First Grow - Cheapest CFL Grow ever!
Alright well this is my first grow and I do call it the absolute cheapest grow ever. I mostly say this due to the fact that everything I have used to date has been lying around the house, hence me spending $0, so were off to a great start!

so basically right now I germinated 5/6 seeds using ye olde paper towl method

So let's start with my grow area. It is my bedroom closet, and unfortunately, its very small, but i will make the whole bottom of the closet available as the plants grow. I lined the walls with aluminum foil, (because apparently mylar is non existent in north florida) and Im currently using 1 - 26w 6700k CFL but tommorow that will change to 3 or 4.

Like I was saying, I planted the seeds yestderday, and as of tonight 2 of the 5 have already sprouted out (these two actually had pretty long 'tails' coming out of the seed after germing) and im sure the rest are not far behind. I know I am way under recommended lighting but again, that will change tomorrow.

So before I keep rambling,
I plan to switch to all 2700k with maybe 1 - 6700k bulb for flowring , but should I throw in a 42w 2700k bulb in with the daylight bulbs during veg to make a full spectrum or no?

Comments and Advice are ALWAYS appreciated
thanks in advance Im blazin

i would put the 42 watt bulb in your room just for the sake of adding that much more lumens to your grow. the red spectrum wont hurt the overall spectrum. you can also paint your area white to make it more reflective. (if possible). aluminum foil is generally not recommended to be used as a reflective material.

how big is your overall grow space for these 5 plants?

good luck on your first grow!!

Thanks jact,

The area is already white, but its like an eggshell, I think im just going to stick with the aluminum foil until i run accross some mylar, it seems to be doing ok.
My grow space right now isnt being fully used, but I will be using the bottom half of my closet which is 3.5 feet tall, 2 or 3 foot deep, and about 5 foot long

New pics on day 3, the 2 sprouts are taller now and the other 3 havent quite sprouted yet, im sure their not far behind, like I said those 2 had pretty long tails coming out of the seed when i planted, so they had a headstart

I forgot to mention these are just some bagseeds, so only god knows what they will turn to be...we shall see
Thanks in advance to everyone who gives me some advice, im aware of better light setups, which I will do next time, but this time I am going to do all CFL and see how it goes

Ok well under more inspection, I can see the seed on one of the 3 that haven't sprouted yet, so its only a few hours away from being there. also one of the other ones that hasn't sprouted showed its tail earlier, and i carefully dug around it and discovered it was upside down so i flipped it and it should do well now.

Im off to the hardware store to get more fixtures for more lights

Pics to come in a little while

Alright well after a wonderful trip to the home improvement store, I picked up some more CFL's including a 42w 2700k bulb.

So now my setup has 4 6700k Daylight bulbs (2 from each side) and one 42w 2700k right in the middle.

It seems to be plenty of lights for my little setup, I will have pics in a hour or two, I need a smoke and something to eat

Just a quick update, I moved the seedlings within 3-4 inches from the lights only because thats all I keep reading on this website. So should I move them away or closer?

I included some pictures. the one plant that sprouted and looked great is already probably an inch tall(second to last pic), and the other one is only millimeters behind it. In the last picture, on the bottom of the wet spot you can see the seed showing on the surface so it will be pushing it up shortly, tell me what you guys think.

P.S. check out the second to last picture, it is the best looking sprout, but the stem is kinda curved back and forth so im wondering whats up with it, anything to be worried about?

Do you have a vent and are you using fans? Also, when I looked for mylar, nobody knew what I was talking about. I asked for Reflectix and they have it in sheets and tape. Not Walmart, but Home Depot and Ace Hardware both carry it. I swear by reflection from the lights.

you can get mylar wrapping paper at wal-mart or some place similar. So i would check into this before getting some from a growing place.

I got my mylar from a local hydroponic store. was like 20 bucks for 25 feet, fucking expensive by my standards. but worth it i guess. you can also order it online from any hydroponic site. i havent heard of reflectix, i am gonna look into that as well, thanks katwoman.

you babies look like they are off to a healthy start and great life.

Well to be honest at the moment i just had each end of the closet open and my ceiling fan in my bedroom on. I planned on going to pick up a small osculating fan tonight at walmart along with some Mylar. (i freaking hope)

I dont want too much craziness coming out of my closet for ventilation so any advice would be loved.

thanks jact, another comment though, it seems the seedling, despite the lighting, does seem to turn a ;little towards the 42w 2700k bulb. Does this seem so because i have the seeds too close to the lights so its going to the closest source of light?

How far should i keep my little squares away from the light?
