With nothing to do this summer, I decided to grow my babies in their own private greenhouse and finish them with some indoor techniques. I bought Cali Orange and Arctic Sun for this experiment. The Cali should fair well in the outdoor climate and I heard that Arctic could, as well.
The greenhouse has six foot tall wood sides that are painted white. This should keep any neighbors from seeing them. I am placing a charcoal filter over the vent to try to elinmate some of the smell. These are pictures of my two girls; the cali on the left and arctic on the right. It is about one and a half weeks after germination in my window sill. After they have alternating nodes I will take my clones and introduce covers to start early flowering. Last edited by Silentbobs son; 05-28-2009 at 01:30 PM.. |

Well, my babies have turned 2 weeks old. I added some MG tomato nute to the soil two day ago. I have seen a slight increase in growth, but this is outdoors. I wish they would grow faster but all in due time.
I have been added fish emulution every four days. I am not sure if this is right and I know it not burn the girls. What does worry me about this is the salt intake. If anyone has suggestions on a better way to use fish emulsion please let me know. Organic products are new too me and I want to optimize them as much as possible. Here are the two gals. The Cali is first and the Arctic is second. I did put a small tear in one of the leaves of the Arctic, but at least it wasn't a fan. Last edited by Silentbobs son; 06-01-2009 at 05:26 PM.. |

Well, heat is beginning to become a problem. So I made a few improvements this morning. I opened the vent area more, added a carbon filter to kill some of the smell coming out later, and installed a fan. My wife saw my setup and asked what everything was. I said just veggies and flowers...she doesn't know what mj looks like or smells like. Luckily, she doesn't go outside and disturbs my sanctuary. So here is some pics of the new equipment.

Disaster stuck yeaterday. While working on my upgrades, I put my babies outside. We started having heavy winds but I was not thinking. Little Anne, the Arctic, was blown flat and I did not notice for two hours. After putting them back inside the gh, her condition worsened. The tips of her leaves began to turn brown and I thought her stem may have broken. I quickliy started putting together my nursery and recovery area. I left her under a 42w cfl alnight hoping she would not die. To my surprise this morning, the entire basement smelt like weed. SHE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE FAN LEAVES, YET!!!!! I was so happy. I can't believe how much she improved. I just moved her back out this morning and now she is also the same size as her sister, Cali. I will not be leaving them exposed anymore.
I tested the soil and water yesterday after all or this happened. Both were too alkaline so I dosed both girls with a heavy fish emulsion mixture. They seem to enjoy the lower ph now. I could kick myself for not doing this sooner. The pictures are the start of my nursery. We never use our sauna and it has a small window to the outside. What a perfect place. The cedar keep the room dry and mold/mildew free and tile floors make it easy to clean up spills. I am going to line the wall with a dull white poster boards and add an adjustable rack to make dealing with the lights easier. I will post more pictures after I finish.

Well Annie is still not doing good. After taking her outside again she started more leave curl. I dug her out to make sure it was a stem break and not nute burn. And, there it was. About a 1/4 inch below the surface, the stem had been bent in half. I took some rocks and put them all around her. Better for them to support her weight right now than her. I, also, flushed the soil a bit. It stinks like rotted fish bad. Hopefully, I will have good news on her tomorrow.

Today both Cali and Anne are back indoors under lights. Anne is slowly getting better in her new soil, I think. Cali got nute burn. I feel so stupid for doing it. But she got a good flush. I am making mistakes I have never done when I was in the deep south. This far northern climate is throwing me off. It is still hitting the 30's in June, JUNE!!! What the hell, Canadians need alot of weed just to live in this shit. Maybe in a few days after the 24/0 cycle I put them on I will have good news to report.

The soil is still not right. I made some myself to cure the mounting problems. Seems all the soil I put them in has extremely poor drainage properties. I will not buy premixed potting soil again. The new soil mix is one part blood/bone meal mix, 3 parts perlite, and 6 parts soil. This new soil can drain and retain moisture days. These new conditions are a vast change from the hot and humid weather in the south. There you must water, water, and water because of the spring through fall drought conditions. My neighbor agreed with me, everything I did know is now useless. If these girls die, I have a grapefruit strain called Citrus Mistress to replace them. God I hope they make it. First nute burn and now suffication from the soaked soil. Give me a hot and humid climate anyday.

I had to take drastic measures 2 days ago. With root rot setting in and total death happpening anyday, I cut them. The seedlings were already stunted and dying so what the hell. I got some rooting gel and dipped them, put them in perlite, then cut the lights on to wait. Cali now has healthy hairs coming out of what is left of the stem, most had died. I am still waiting on Anne. If they pull though, I will have pictures of their progress in a few days. Also, the Citrus Mistress seeds have germinated. They will go in the soil, soon. I won't make the same mistake with them. I have learned much about growing in a northern environment the past 2 weeks. I still miss the southern heat, though.

Anne and Cali have died. The rooting mix worked good at first and then they were gone. Here's some pics of before they passed.
