Firstly I put my kit together which comprises of the following elements:
5 Isis Seeds (Feminized) Propagator Root Riot Cubes Homebox (1.2 x 1.2 x 2m) MaxiBright Grow Light + Diamond 600w HPS with Digital Ballast. 1 4 Way Contactor with Timer 125mm Extraction Kit Temperature controller (Extraction) 1 pair of EasyGliders Cana Coco Professional Plus Cana Coco Nutrient Kit 2 Oscillating desk fans Temperature/Hygrometer with Max/Min Essentials Ph Meter Essentials EC Meter Ph Buffer Conductivity Standard Syringes (10mml & 100ml) Two 12 Litre Buckets Clay Pebbles Bio-Degradable potting cups 4 Paint Roller trays (For standing pots in!) Two 5 meter twin extension sockets 6 large pots 6 small pots I thinks that's about everything although being a bit stoned I've most likely forgotten something. Anyhow, it was a real last minute snap decision to start a grow but after seeing the success a friend had from four of these plants (Isis) and on a relatively low budget of £700 give or take a few quid; that coupled with the fact I'm just sick and tired of paying too much money for rubbish weed that bears no reference at all to the weighting structure that naturally follows weed around, I mean £20 for 2.4g in the bag is just plain wrong! So I got fed up of just moaning about it and grabbed the proverbial tree by the branches and set about my climb. After gathering all the equipment in the space of about 2 days I set about putting my seeds into my root riot cubes and slightly re-moistened them with some tap water I had left out overnight to ensure the dispersion of any unwanted chlorine, oh and prior to any kind of water going any where near my seeds I tested the Ph of the tap water we have and it had a Ph of 7.4 which is considered to be soft water, also I didn't soak my seeds in any way they just went straight from packet to root riot cube and then into the propagator which was inserted swifly into the airing cupboard and covered with a towel, I hung the probe of my Temp/Hygro meter in just to monitor the condition in there and it was pretty steady, a Temp. of around 30 degrees C and a humidity of around 47%. Within 36 hours all 4 seeds had germinated and looked nearly ready to get potted in the bio-degradable cups with some Cana Coco. I pre-prepared the 4 cups with Coco and 4 root riot cubes from the packet so as to allow easy potting, also the seeds stayed in there original Root Riot cube as these can be planted from the off. The pre-prepared pots were then put into the Homebox under a 250w Sodium Bulb with Ballast (Borrowed from a friend hence not on the list) to bring all the temperatures in line with that of the environment they were to be housed, this may or may not matter but it seemed like the decent thing to do, after 12 hours of acclimatisation I removed the seeds from the cupboard un re-potted the root riot cubes replacing the ones in the Coco with the ones that housed my precious seedlings. To finish I added a small layer of Coco over the top. The lighting at present is 24 hours a day and started at a distance of 3 feet away but this has been reduced steadily for the last 6 days to prevent my plants from stretching up to the light and being too lanky and the distance now is 30 inches, this will be monitored closely for the first day or so to ensure I'm not frying the lovely ladies. For the first feed they got (After 2 days in homebox) was the recommended light mix (available from Cana website) for a 2 litre container and the final feed had an EC of 0.8 and a Ph of 6.1, this was left a day and checked prior to use which was a good job as the Ph had risen to around 7.6 from 6.1 the EC remained the same. So to sum up a pretty long winded first enrty I got the gear I needed along with some sound advice from a friend and got myself under way and started from seed on Saturday night, potted and placed into the Homebox on Monday evening and it's now Saturday and I can see genuine results that I am most satisfied with, onwards and upwards! Oh a quick tip, if, like me, you're planning on getting set up anytime soon I really can't stress enough how much you can save by going to one shop for the vast majority of your stuff and buying as much of it at one time as you can. I got something like a £140 discount! better in our pockets I think you'd agree, plus I price checked a load of stuff and rang the store and asked if they price match and if I could have some discount for buying so much at one time, the nice bloke agreed and I saved well over a tonne! I think that's about all for now but I shall keep this updated with the relevant progress and feel free to comment on anything you've read here too. Here are some picture of the plants after 6 days from seeds. Last edited by Fantomashed; 03-23-2009 at 12:24 PM.. |

Cheers Cana Man, we'll session hard come harvest festival!
Time for an update: O.K, the young plants have now been re-potted into slightly larger pots now but remained in there bio-degradable planting pots, myself and Canna Man came up with this thought to reduce Root and plant stress when re-potting as the pot itself helps with Root growth and eventually disintegrates thus removing the need to harass the young Root system quite as much. When the young plants were re-potted we checked the holes we had put in the bottom for drainage and a tap root was already poking out looking for a place to go; which was great to see as this was Saturday afternoon and the plants were only germinated the previous Saturday, the cup by the way is about the size of an average plastic water dispenser cup so the roots had really started to bed out and when you think they were planted about 3/4 of the way up the cup with some coco into the top of a Root Riot cube; you can well imagine this was growth Canna Man and I were most pleased to see. Also having recently installed the Extractor Kit with Temperature Controller (Thanks Canna Man!) the temperature and humidity of the Homebox has really settled down to a nice 25-27 Degrees Celsius with a humidity of 43-45%, water was added to the bottom of the trays this morning to bring humidity up from around 37% and this seemed to have a positive effect as it settled earlier today at the previously mentioned figures, both Oscillating fans are not being used at the moment as the Homebox has been really steady for a good 9 hours now through daytime to nightfall and one side vent and the back vent are currently still open. As for the plants themselves; they are looking really good, the first leaves have started to show proper teeth and the small yet promising growth tips are showing through nicely too albeit in a small capacity on each plant. The next feed has been prepared and will most likely be given to the plants tomorrow evening, it's now got 4ml Coco(A), 4ml Coco(B), 4ml Rhizotonic and 5ml of Canazym per 2 litres of water and carries a pH of 5.8 and an EC of 1.1, this naturally had to be pH downed and will be left overnight to disperse chlorine and also allow the feed to mix correctly and just like last time I will be checking the pH again before the plants receive a feed. I imagine the next progress report will either be when the plants are re-potted again or when something interesting happens good or bad. Again please feel free to comment in relation to any element of this grow should you so desire. |

Just a Quick picture update.
The plants have been growing well as you can see and are still on the medium 2 litre Canna feed although 500ml per plant isn't quite giving me the run off I'd like so I've mixed up 4 litres this time instead. Not much else to report really apart from the front left hand side plant is showing some minor yellowing this will be monitored over the coming days and weeks but I will add at this point that there will be no update for a couple of weeks due to work commitments etc. however my lovely lady will be tending to the plants and taking the weekly pictures so that I can see the progress while I'm away and also to help keep my journal up to speed. See you in a few weeks! Last edited by Fantomashed; 03-27-2009 at 09:18 PM.. |

Just thought I'd pop a few more photos up as my Girlfriend and I went away for the night yesterday and upon our return I noticed some hellish growth, it could be due to the fact that it's the first time I've not seen them for over 24 hours but I'll let you be the judge of that.
Also they got a medium strength feed today which had a PH of 5.8 and an EC of 1.1, they also got a decent run off from the feed as the yellowing on the front left plant could be due to a this not having been done before since re-pot. Myself and Canna Man have mulled it over a few times and as of yet it's not a major concern but it will be monitored, a build up of salts resulting in a nitrogen lock out seems the most likely suspect but as I said earlier ; not a major worry and the Epsom salts won't be coming out just yet! Hi again, it's been a while but work is as work does etc. Quite pleasingly there is not a great deal to report except real healthy growth from root to tip, as you can see by the photos uploaded below there is some very nice vegetation going on so I'd say on this day we're maybe 2 weeks max. away from flowering but before flowering we're going to give them a bast on a 600w metal halide then hit the 12/12 with the 600w sodium, the hope is to get some real dense canopies on the go and then tweak it accordingly as flowers begin to gain some size.
The front left hand side pant has had some minor yellowing and seemed to recover well with a flush, this isn't a major concern for me still as the majority of the plant is looking very good, definitely one to watch though. The readings are pH of 5.6 to 6.0 mostly at 5.8 and the EC is currently at 1.5, the temp. is still in around the 25 degree sweet spot however the humidity is, as expected, getting harder to control due to the regular increase in plant size. A shopping trip for some spare bulbs and an air intake will be happening very soon so this should keep a marginally steadier environment, in the meantime it's oscillating desk fans and a 125mm extractor. Please excuse the order of the pictures, I'm sure you'll figure out the order of the shots by the plants anyhow. As always any and all comments welcome. Also latest picture update to follow in a few minutes. Enjoy. |
