The most wonderful time of year! So I figured I would give myself a gift of some plants, albeit into next year, but who cares! Anyway, here is my latest grow.
11/29/08 - 12 midnight. Plan on growing 5 plants. Put 5 seeds between layers of wet paper towel, in a ziploc bag. Placed it under the living room cable box where it is dark and warm. All 5 seeds have the black tiger stripes, the seeds are brown and big. These seeds are free bagseed from a good batch. |

11/30/08 - 4:00PM. Opened the bag and towel to check things. The towel has not lost any moisture. In fact it almost seems wetter. The bag interior was humid with water vapor. The towel was very warm to the touch. Let the bag air out for one minute. The seeds have not cracked yet, but they have swollen a lot - still hard to the touch with little pressure. Put the bag and all back under the cable box.

12/1/08 - 11:45PM. Opened the bag and to my surprise one of the seeds sprouted. It has a 2mm taproot (white) emerging from the slightly cracked seed casing. The other 4 seeds have not cracked yet, but they are even more swollen than last time I checked. The towel was warm and moist still. The towel was not soaking wet, just damp now.

12/2/08 - 10:00PM. Took the rooted seed out of the towel. Wet the soil thoroughly. Poked a 1/2" hole in the center of a 6" clay pot. Soil is Fox Farm. Planted the seed in the hole, root down, leaving a little of the seed above the surface of the soil. Did not water. The other seeds were moistened again and put under the cable box, the same way. Put the pot and seed under a 13watt CFL for now, 24 hours, 2 1/2" away from the soil surface.

12/3/08 - 6AM, 8PM. Put the potted seed in the direct sun all day on a windowsill thats facing south. At dusk, put the seedling under the CFL all night. Trying for 24 hours of mixed light for a while. Other seeds still have not sprouted. Moved them to a spot on top of the computer. Did research today, the seed might be a female that has sprouted. Characterized by the big indentation where it was attached to the mother plant. Root is turning greenish and is getting a woody section on it going from the soil up. Seed case is still attached.

12/9/08 - 12AM. The seedling has its first set of cotyledons, and is getting ready to put out the first set of true leaves. Watering when dry. 24 hour light cycle for the time being, with natural direct sunlight during the day. Stem is getting hairy and woody, and the plant has nice vigor. It is about 1" tall. Have not fertilized it yet.

12/12/08 - 3PM. Put the plant in the direct sun today for a few hours, to try and get some more light/different light spectrum's to the plant. Watering every other day, this little guy, or girl, is thirsty! Saw some moss growing on the soil surface, killed it. That was a first in my 20 some odd years of gardening and horticulture experience. Plant is about an inch to an inch and a half tall from the soil surface. Still on 24 hour light cycle until its a little taller, then will cut to 18. Here are some pictures, taken moments ago.
On a side note, the most weird thing about this seedling, is the strange white, undeveloped cotyledon. Very interesting. |

12/17/08 - 5PM. Nothing new to report. Plant is growing good, lots of new growth. Cotyledons are finally dying. Let the plant dry out for 3 days before watering it just now. Gonna let it dry out now between waterings, just a little. Its a weed after all! Anyway, here is a new picture. Time to get more lights.
Weather Rant - living in Denver, CO for 23 years, and now living near Atlanta, GA is a major weather culture shock for me. Its going to be in the freakin 70s and 80s? WHAT! I know they say "if you dont like it, leave" very tempting, but my wife is from here, so I am not moving. But my point....gonna put the plant outside possibly. Hell its summer now. HATE the heat. Why the fuck did I move back home to GA of all freakin places? Ok I am done. Just miss my snow, and my cooler temperatures. Real "easy" to get in the holiday spirit when its 80 and chicks are walking around in short shorts. Might as well live in Miami, LA or El Paso! Wait, its winter there, and cooler than 80! WTF!! Ok now I am done!! Stay tuned for this grow turning to an OUTDOOR grow tomorrow. Last edited by joshranwest; 12-17-2008 at 09:36 AM.. |

12/19/08 - 11PM. Plant is growing very fast. Still have on 24 hour light. Considering going 18 hours light but we will see. Plant is starting to get that odor! Smell it 1' away. From the looks of it, looks like I have a Satvia on my hands.
Have not added any nutes yet. Straight tap water thats been sitting out for a few days. Watering when dry (about every 3 days). Starting a nute program in January. Last edited by joshranwest; 12-19-2008 at 02:30 PM.. |
