Default Clones a Comin
Here are some pics from this am. My idea is to clone the main stem from each plant to flower and to continue to grow the mothers for clones that will become mothers.

Makes me really nervous to cut the main stem especially if I haven't had success with the clone box yet.

Will do some asking around about this issue.

Grow is looking awesome. Your main stems look like tree trunks! I'm not clear on what you plan on doing clone-wise. Can you re-explain for those of us on the short bus?

+ Rep for massive stems.

Thanks for the rep!

This is my first try with hydro and I went ahead and started seeds in soil because that is what I am familiar with.

If I clone the plants that are currently in soil and start them on hydro I will still have a good genetic standby in soil till I get it down.

I have a cutting from a friends garden and it has not rooted in two weeks. I checked the stem tip and it was swollen white crusted. I recut the stem and put it in fresh RW yesterday and will wait and see.

So basically my plan is to clone and flower the main stem and grow mothers from clone to take over for the ones in soil.

Your not on the short bus I just started this grow strange for a hydro setup.

OK Now I'm up to speed. I'd definitely like to see your cloning process. Being that I'm on my first grow, I didn't want to mess with cloning, I'm just trying to learn how to take a grow from start to finish. Clones will be part of my next grow for sure. Looking forward to seeing what you go through....

Good luck!

I cut my White Widow main stem for cloning last night and went to a friends house for a couple of hours and when I returned it had flopped over and wilted almost in half.

I was happy to see this morning that it had straightened up a great deal and was starting to fill its leaves back out.

Here is a pic of the clone this am and a shot of the mother from which it came. The mother is already filling out the lower stems that I left for more clones.

The hardest part about using this method A batch of clones in rockwool is keeping the RW cubes at the right moisture content. The method calls for setting the cubes directly on the heating mat, that combined with the constant cycling of the exhaust fan to maintain 86F dries out the cubes quickly.

I have been experimenting with a way to keep them at just the right level of dampness. I thought of some type of dripper system but I have enough going on mechanical wise in that little space.

Then I thought I would try some kind of wicking system. I started by just using a half a paper towel folded lengthwise several times and it wicked way too fast. It would suck the tray dry in a few hours, not good. So I cut a really this strip of paper towel and used that as the wick to a larger piece on the mat. So far it seems like it really reduces the need for constant attention. The cubes still have to be checked and adjusted as to the amount of the cube that contacts the wicking system. I think this could work nicely with a little practice and some tweaking.

The water in the tray is Ph5.5 with 5ml of H2O2 per gallon. So the bonus is that I can keep a couple cubes of RW ready for cloning on a dime.

I think I will as this post is getting long, and I will make another post in a while with more pics.

Thanks guys for stopping by and checking the grow.

I've never seen a main stem clone attempt before. What are the benefits of using the main stem as opposed to the "normal" method of taking branches lower on the plant?
