I think you're spot on and I think chains and S hooks all the way.

Thanks for the input. You've reinforced my fears!

Default All in soil
Things of note:

I moved the final 2 four inch rockwool experiments to soil. 1 in a 2 gallon pot and the other into a 5 gallon pail with holes drilled in the bottom. I'm curious to see the difference in yield between a 2 and 5 gallon pot.

I scored by finding 99 cent wrapping paper that seems to reflect light about as good as mylar. (zellers for you canadians) Some of these pics testify to that! I also used some of it to make a DIY reflector.

The slow plants seem to be plodding on forever but the big one is really taking off - accelerating in fact which set impossible standards for the others.

A few pics:

Insul-foamed the frame of the door to the room. No light or sound can escape now.

Two of the HPS which is patiently waiting and the passive vent to outside in the background with different focus points.

An example of the new reflective wrapping paper I'm using instead of mylar and a shot of the emergency blanket i was using before (sucks - too wrinkly).

Some more pics of the diy reflector and the 5 gallon vs. 2 gallon pots.

QUESTION: any experts out there can weigh in... My biggest plant is in a pot that is only filled 2/3's with soil. It was a lot closer to the brim when i first planted but after soaking with water the soil level sank. I am considering either re-potting (dangerous??) or just putting soil on top to reach the brim. Please help with advice on a course of action!

CFL QUESTION: My number 2 plant is under a single 42watt jumbo cfl. It's colour temp is 2700k. Is this ok for now or do I need to get a higher color temp bulb on it too?

Why bother adding more soil?.. Not saying you shouldnt, just wondering what the point would be? Are you needing the soil closer to the brim for some reason?

As far as the lights, you can grow it using the 2700k.. but "they" recommend using a daylight for veg rather than a 2700k.

My only other grow, was sort of just tossed together. I had a plant in a cup in the window cill. I determined I didnt want the "stretch" so I kicked a 42watt 2700k on it and it grew fantastically. So, it will work... its just recommended to use a daylight. ... theyre cheap. May as well pick a few up.

I just thought that the plant needed as much soil as possible in order to grow well and to its best potential.

So.... I went and got some lights and set up this little system...a reflector still to come!

Try not. Do or do not, there is no try.

Maybe I'll just add some on top. But will it do anything for the plant or just make it look peachy?

I'm not a CFL guy, but it looks like you've got a nice set up for your baby. Is that Grodan or Laurel under the lights?

When my bagseed test plant got a bit stretchy, I added soil around the stem to effectively shorten the stem. It caused no ill effects, and I have read that it will increase the root structure of your plant.

Of course I am a total noob, and it could kill your plant.

You can lift her up carefully by using something to get deep under her so you don't disturb the roots and with that pot you can. Just be careful with those roots, throw some fresh dirt in there make room for her roots that have grown, fill dirt to right below first leaves & water. You'll be good to go...

I am a cfl guy & I LOVE IT! Cheaper, sufficient, closer proximity. I also use hps too but cfl's work great for veg...
