BHO Closed Loop Extraction Questions

I have been blasting through my glass tubes for about 10 years now. I am sick and tired of holding the damn tube with my hands. I am extremely interested in purchasing or building a closed loop system but I only have a small understanding of how they work. If anyone would like to elaborate and show pictures of theirs that would be awesome. I know I have seen a pic or 2 but nothing solid, thanks in advance

Its like an alcohol still. you run your butane through your extraction tube, which is connected to a rez to hold your butane/thc mix.

Then you close off the extraction tube, set thhe rez in hot water and open a relief valve on the side of the rez. your condenser is set in cold water. The condenser is the same as the rez except with no extraction tube and its set in cold water to create a vacuum.

You will also need a little carrier liquid like iso-alcohol or ethanol (everclear) so the thc has something to grab onto when you recapture the butane.

That way you can pour it out and not have to scrape the bottom of the extraction rez.

Heres a vid that better explains it.

Chec the part 1 as well.

I'm liking this method, anyone have larger DIY setups? Ballpark range of cost?

Well the butane is gonna run you about 150 if youve got an AirGas near you. If not its gonna cost a little more because youll have to go out and buy a bunch of cans of butane and pump them into your system

Im actually trying to make a copy of the tasmisium extractor shown above. I just have an airgas down the street from me so itll be worth it to invest in one tank of butane instead of payin 10 bucks for each can of butane thats of lesser quality.

Then you gotta get a good quality stainless steel. Not sure how high or what specific alloy combo you need but the skunk pharm probably has it listed. i think its 304 stainless. not sure exactly.

But that and someone who knows how to weld is crucial to make it worth while.

If i end up getting the funds to build mine i can let you know the cost of production.

You can get 304SS parts to build a unit from Glacier Tank.

The automated Mk II, processes two pounds per load and cost about $8K to build. The automated Mk V will cost between 10 and $15K to build. You could build a manual one for between 8 and $10K.

About $3.1K to Glacier Tank for stainless pieces.

The Lil Terp, doesn't requires pumps and such, so you can build one of those for around $500 and the Mk III Terpenator for around $800, plus pumps and ancillaries, or about $3K.

Thanks Fade ill have to look up the lil terp. I've been lookin for one that only runs a zip or 2 at a time cause its mostly for personal use. And I'm not tryin to spend 8k or get a whole cvacuum set up to run my butane. Just hot and cold like the tasmisium.

My brother is a ss fabricator. If we piece out most of the ss from extra stuff from his shop it should be easy to build. We're looking at your Mk III Terpenator plans fadedawg, it's pretty bad ass. If we ever get this built I'll post the build, thanks everyone for the help

The Lil Terp holds about two ounces.

Look forward to seeing your build bro!

I wonder how many Mk IIIA's there are in the world today? Judging from the response at just Glacier Tank and Specialized Formulations, they have become a popular item.

We're curious about how many people in the world are running these also. My brother wants to make a lil terp for himself now also, he calculated some astronomical number of what we have spent in butane in just the last few months and is sold! Love the help here at RIU!

Ordered a pre fabbed MKIII-lil Terpenator...

Ordered with all the bells and whistles. Whoo whoop....
Yeeeeee....Hashhaha!!!

This bad boy is sick...

I just wanted to report that we went for the most bang for our bucks..
2K...

Okay... It's not mine, but I acted as a representative for my collective in the process of ordering.
My reward for doing the” leg-work” for the dispensary is free access to the extractor when I please, and some extra perks ;)

We ordered an extra column, a second collection vessel in which is stackable..

And last but certainly not least... A lexan lid for purging in the same vessel..
FD?

I am slightly confused on the second stackable collection vessel, the nice young lady I spoke with said it can be used for a separate strain..

If I'm following correctly on comprehension; can I run two batches simultaneously?

Now that I ask that question aloud... I'm guessing this isn't feasible??
As both columns would have to be packed and connected to the same tank?

I'm super excited that we can vacuum purge in our collection vessel..less agitation from transfer, and less loss of yield from transfer.

Sorry, one more question FD...

I Am Reading this correctly in the email I received..
” the lexan lid is available to act as a lid for purging”

Anywho...
Pics/report/product as soon as it arrives.

Thank you FD!!! Thank you,
Sda

lol oh jeez, this isnt gonna be another one of those super mario bros piranha plant dome type stories again is it???

hahaha just bugging ya!!! thats sweet. I would LOVE one of those in the future, but theyre a bit complicated for me right now and my living arrangements.

Yeah, I came up with the Polycarbonate lid for the Terpenators, so you can watch what is going on and do more of the vacuum finishing in the Terpenator itself.

I like it for making cotton candy shatter, which you can purge below sensory threshold using the Polycarbonate lid to monitor,.

If you take that shatter and melt it into a thin film at 115F and -29.5"Hg, some more butane will escape, so it doesn't replace a heated vacuum chamber or oven, unless you keep the oil in the lower tank in a thin film.

If you keep it in a thin film, you can set the chamber in hot water and do full purges. In thicker films, you can make things like waxes.

The second bottom chamber, is so that you can take the lower chamber off and clean the extracted oil out of it, while continuing to run the Terpenator on other product, using that second one.

You can also clamp two bottoms together, to make a taller collection vessel, and run more columns before cleaning out the oil.

Lol...lmao..

Thank you VP...
not a bullshit story this time...haha,

The dispensary can actually afford this purchase, unlike my spending 2 bills on a damn dome...lol

I put up nothing except the ordering and on how to use it.
All the dispensary had to do was get the money order.

FD!!!

Ohmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmnnnn

Why is butane the prefered solvent , I would imagine CO2 would work just as well ? and it's safer to work with and cheaper

The liquid solvent at the bottom collection vesel , Is that so you dont loose product during evaporation ??

I believe I understand the process well but , it seems everyone overcomplicates it It seems to me all that you need to preform a supper critical fluid extraction is a tank of solvent , a tank regulator , the propper pressure rated hose, 2 pressure rated ball valves, a short piece of pipe adapted to your hose with the valve on bolth sides of it (SS?) ,and A sealed collection vessile ??

Well for a good co2 extraction youd want to get it super critical. Which isnt hard just takes some knowledge or you can blow yourself up just as easy as bho by over pressuring one of your containers.

Ive heard this before also, that butane does a better job at extracting the different terpines and since alot of the medical benefits are in the terps that could cause a problem. At the same time though i hear people raving about co2 oil.

As for the solvent at the bottom, thats more for if you dont want to/ cant purge your oil in the collection vessel. Id assume the tamisium extractor could handle a vacuum, but the person in the video must have just wanted to show it on a pyrex.

It's pretty easy to get CO2 to a super critical state, but it requires high pressure, so the equipment is expensive, if you are doing more than just lab experiments.

Not cheap, even if you just use scuba tanks, like a couple of brothers have thus far. IE: http://jyndustriez.blogspot.com/ .

A few other thoughts at http://skunkpharmresearch.com/affordable-diy-co2-extraction/

It also isn't very fast compared to butane extraction, because CO2 can't hold much oil, so it takes a higher exchange rate, over a longer period of time.

A typical SCFE CO2 extraction in a commercial unit, takes about 8 hours, to do what a closed circuit butane system can do in an hour and the equipment costs about 10X.

The beauty of SCFE CO2, is its selectivity potential, not it competitiveness from a speed or cost standpoint.

Okay so building these are pretty straight forward. I am just stumped on the filling of butane process. What's the best way to go about doing it. What on earth do you tell the nosey ass guy at the airgas supply why you are buying a full tank of butane? I don't want him knowing my business but they are inquisitive down there

Airgas locally requires a registered business and a storefront, which they can visit and inspect, to keep from selling butane to those who would use it for illegal drug extraction.

We use n-Butane in our research company, for plant terpene extraction.
