Is it heat or lumens that stress the plant?

"One grower you service", eh? Aint gonna touch that one.

No way, not with a typical horizontal hood. That is botanically impossible due to the destruction (bleaching) of chlorophyll/chloroplasts.

The crap I read so often in these forums: "you can't give a plant too much light" is just that, crap. When some one says that I know immediately they are a chest beating, attention ho newb who knows nothing about botany....what makes a plant tick.

Here are actual f.c. measurements I made years ago of 2 HPS in small, highly reflective hoods.....and no, I don't wanna hear any uppity crap regarding PAR.

DISTANCE FROM LIGHT............F.C. READING

.......................250W HPS...........600W HPS

Within 6" (Way off 10K f.c. scale, for both lamps)

6".......................10,000................10K+

8".......................7,100.................10K+

12"......................4,800.................8,700

18"......................2,800.................5,600

24"......................2,000.................4,200

30"......................1,400.................3,300

Frame of reference: sun = 9,000 - 10,000 average, clear summer day, high noon
Cool White fluor measured 2" from bulb = 1,200 f.c.

Enjoy,
Uncle Ben
100% correct, to a tee. Hands on and experience tells a different story. Too bad for you if you haven't figured this out by now. You must have control issues with your environment if you have an issue, which means more research...hint...light diffuser...Don't say I didn't do anything for you...JAS

UB actually has an entire thread he started on diffused light. It's a good read. You should check it out.

Actually I have read every word he has written. We have even spoken face to face if its the gentleman I'm thinking it is. I don't really know why he acts this way? In a grow room you will never reach the point of damage from excess light. Its impossible! Now, not properly placing them correctly is a room thing. If your grow environment is set up correctly you will never be able to keep up with the heat generated. The limit to an indoor room isn't light its control of temps. Negative pressure can have some severe effects on a structure and there is only so much air you can fill a room with. He would be a much better mentor to these people if he checked his poor attitude at the door and even better...be willing to admit he is not always right. The man has skills, no doubt, but as for being the end all...not a chance. JAS

Take your own advise, jackass.

I have never spoken face to face with any cannabis grower.

You keep digging yourself deeper into the grave you've created. What in the hell is your problem?

I suspect you are all missing a vital point here. It's all well and good having belting ventilation and getting your lights up close but what will you footprint of growing area be? Ok, so a vertical bulb with a cooltube can get to within 1" of buds. That gives yo maybe a circumference of maybe 6", and 3ft of height so a screen area (sorry, but you need to scrog to be doing this) of around 5ft square.
Take the cooltube away, increase the circumference to 4 ft, the height to 4ft and you have 50 ft of screen area, same electricity use.
OK, so this is an extreme and simplified explanation but I hope you all get the point. It's about finding the balance between your own needs for space/electricity and ventilation but also the growing area.

Uncle Ben,

Once again I'm straying from the topic....God I wish you had PM.

I have three Dinafem "Original Amnesia" (Sativa) plants that have been in 12/12 for about 8 weeks. Two of the three have grown as expected, but one is what I describe as being on acid. While the other's have formed strong trunks and branches, this one has rubbery branches, even the thick ones, and is growing much like ground-cover as instead of producing buds or bud sites, it's growing yet more branches. Eight weeks into 12/12 and I have zero bud sites or buds starting.

By the looks of it, it doesn't even look like it's thinking about producing buds. I know I'm an impatient grower, but eight week in 12/12 and NOTHING!?!

I've eliminated the things I thought would be the problem like light-bleeding during the night cycle (the room's pretty tight) as the other plants show no signs of this problem. It has been in the exact same environment as the other two with the same feeding and light schedules.

Is there such a thing as a pot plant that doesn't bloom?

Just thought I would give my 2 cents.. many of mine don't start to flower till 6 weeks in some can go 10... unless your looking for a heavy long flowering sativa, I would cut it down and make room for something else

You wouldn't believe how many times I've thought about hacking this sucker down. The only thing stopping me is that if it does indeed start budding, it should be a massive yielder. That and while my flower room is at full capacity (8 plants) I really don't have anything ready to go in right away.....so I sit and wait.......and wait.....and wait.

A pure sativa blooms based on chronological age, not phytochrome changes induced by a neutral day/night photoperiod.

Patience grasshopper.....

This is my first sativa.....is there an average chronological age I should expect?

While I have your ear...this is a dumb question: When a breeder list flowering time, does the clock start ticking at the first sign of budding, or when it goes into 12/12?

The breeder's listed flowering time for this strain is 10 weeks....will I have to wait 10 weeks after the first sign of budding? That will suck.

Are you trying to say a true sativa is like an auto flower? Blooming based on age and not daylight?...well I couldn't disagree more if that's your opinion.....and I only grow landrace sat's

I've grown an Original Amnesia from Dinafem. It was over a year ago, but I don't remember anything exceptional about the time it took to flower. Most probably around 75 days of 12/12 (under 250 watts of CFL) before it was ready to harvest. The only thing I do remember about it was the weird pheno it seemed to have - really short with compact internodal growth during veg (it had produced at least a dozen nodes by the time it was an inch and a half tall.. crazy), and I remember that it was my highest yielding plant to date. I think it was 86 (maybe 84) grams dried, which is about the most my growing environment can produce.

If your plant hasn't shown any signs of sex after 8 weeks of 12/12, it'll be at least another 8 weeks before it's ready to harvest, assuming it starts shooting out pistils today. In your position, I would yank it and concentrate on the others. They can't be that far away from harvest after 8 weeks of flowering.

Ok.....I've taken a few crummy pics. This photo is actually of two plants of the same strain side-by-side. The branches on the left is an Amnesia that is actually a week behind the plant on the right (the one in question)

In contrast, there's a third plant of the same strain that is the same age and is popping buds and frosty leaves as I would expect.
