Not altogether true.
While it's correct that Shantibaba developed WW while he was with Greehouse
He and Arjan (co-owner of Greenhouse) apparently had a falling out
With Shanti taking himself and his breeding stock to Switzerland
Where he started the Mr. Nice Seedbank
Greenhouse still owns the original names
and presumably genetics from the original crossing

Mr. Nice White Widow is called Black Widow
As near as possible then, Mr. Nice has the original White Widow.

This story never made sense to me! Why would people think Greenhouse would have a worse widow than Mr. Nice? They both have the same genetics....even if he went somewhere else, do you think Greenhouse wouldn't have the same stock and clones??? Unless Shanti robbed Greenhouse........
I think Shanti is a big baby.....acting like he is the man or something....what a nobody.

I was always wondering about Ingmar though.....he has always had the original master widow.........just never got to get seeds. He was operating under another named company for a bit, but not sure if you can get his seeds anymore?

The story is that when Shanti left GHS he took all the mother plants and active projects he was working on with him. Arjan owns GHS, but by background he isn't really a breeder or grower. Left with no parent stock, Arjan had to go elsewhere to try and reconstitute his lost genetics, buying other people's F2s, F3s, or outright knockoffs, and these simply weren't of the same quality.

Now, I wasn't there, I don't know the truth of this story, but if true it would explain why the older GHS genetics are inferior to MNS ones.

Note that the origin of White Widow is still a bit controversial. More than one breeder has "claimed" it. Shanti says he bred it. Arjan has said Ingemar did. I can't remember where I saw the claim, but someone else (maybe Shanti) that Ingemar was one of the assistants on the original breeding project and appropriated some of the plants to create his own version. Again, I don't know the truth, though this is a pretty good summary of the whole debate:

http://www.seedsman.com/pt/origins-of-white-widow/

What I do know is that White Widow was largely a European phenomenon from 20 years ago, back before legal American MMJ when Holland was still THE international "Mecca" for pot.

Adam from THSeeds, who was there in the mid 1990s when this one "hit" has claimed that there was a relatively short period of time of only about two years in the Dutch coffeehouses where everyone had White Widow, and it was actually good. He claims the line was hard to maintain from a genetic standpoint, and pretty quickly everyone was growing inferior F2s, F3s, or just outright knockoffs that simply weren't special anymore. I've even heard it claimed that even Shanti lost the original parent plants a few years back, and his current offering is a rework (which, if true, doesn't mean its bad, just not necessarily identical to the plant from the mid '90s).

Love him or hate him, Steve Tuck has a few choice words to way about this line:

Again, don't know the truth of any of this, but I do know that there are at least 10 from-se-ed version of White Widow out there and many of them simply aren't that good. I'd definitely stay away from any "generic" versions of this.

Whether or not his is the original Widow is controversial, I think (see above). Regardless, his co is De Sjamaan ("The Shaman") se-eds, he's got a bunch of "Widow" hybrid lines, and yes, you can still buy his version of White Widow, if you like.

Thanks Jogrow for the info.
It's an interesting strain.....and definately controvercial!
I think the controvercy lies in the potency. A great widow is pretty much hand down the top strain, i hate to say. I have seen some crazy ones.....and seen prices in high times market prices section that went for as high as $700 an ounce!!!
We(Big Island) have had a superior cut(s) of this strain for ten years.....and people still want it. It's a dank widow, not flowery or fruity, possibly a hint of lemon, but just stinky...earthy,hashy, almost rootbeer earthy. And it is super potent. Pretty much single handidly destroyed most great Hawaiian strains.
So getting back from my tangent ramblings, i think the contrversy is about fame and greed, and i dont think that has any place with the vibe of marijuana.....even though it's a commonplace vibe nowadays.
Thanks for the Deshaman info to......i might try his widow, cause im interested and i have never personally heard him try to lay claims.

You're welcome.

For what its worth, I've never grown either, but I've heard the best White Widows in ceed form are MNS "Black Widow" and De Sjamaan's, in that order. Both of those are probably at least derived from the original genetics; many of the others are really just "impostors" that are totally unrelated, genetically speaking.

I've also heard good things about (oddly enough) Nirvana's version, and Seedsman's, though I've also heard the latter was a genetic "knockoff". Don't know. . .and I'm not going to know, because I'm not giving it a try. There may be a few other "sleepers" that are potentially good, again, don't know.

I have grown one of the "generic" ones in the past (someone gave me the beans, I don't know the breeder) and was completely unimpressed. The plant had OK (but NOT great) potency, but uninteresting flavor, was leafy and not easy to trim, and simply never developed the thick resin layer the plant is known for, despite a several day dark "rest" before harvest. It was a good lesson in NOT growing out "name" lines from no-name breeders, though.

IMO, probably the biggest "winner" here is if you can get your hands on the '98 "Aloha" cut. The story is that this "clone only" line was a cut stolen right off the plant that won the 1995 HT magazine cannabis cup, and this line has been used in a lot of WW commercial crosses. By name, I suspect its also probably exactly this plant/cut that decimated the local Hawaiian strains. Its out there, though finding a cut may not be easy.

I really like Sannies white widow they use. I had the mad scientist pheno in the freebie mad shack. Frosty, yielded well, awesome lemon zest lingering taste, and great effect.

I checked and Sannie said he found his White Widow parent in a pack of older White Widow ceeds. (Presumably mid 1990s vintage when the original line was first available in ceed form). If you really care to know, you could post on his forum and ask him which beans he used. In practice, since you're not going to buy them, I don't really think it makes a difference.

If you like "mad scientist" (which is just White Widow x Herijuana), you can buy a five-pack of fem beans of it from Sannie for only $33 or a ten pack for $64.

I think that's a pretty good pedigree for the price, and realistically, I think for the dollar, you're probably going to do better with that than with most of the white widows, even ones costing quite a bit more.
