(Newser) – A New Zealand woman drove overnight for nearly 200 miles and sent texts as she went—but was probably asleep the whole time. It all started when a concerned friend contacted police shortly after midnight Wednesday because the unnamed woman, who has a sleep disorder, took sleeping pills and drove away from her home, Stuff (NZ) reports. Police knew she was texting, and people who received the texts said she sounded half-asleep. Police tracked her location by her cellphone, but she had moved on by the time officers arrived. Police finally found her slumped over the wheel, asleep, in the driveway of her old home in the town of Mount Maunganui, after what the AFP describes as a five-hour drive. She awoke with "absolutely no recollection of the events overnight," said a police sergeant. "We have sought an urgent order forbidding her to drive and to seek medical advice on her suitability to remain holding her drivers license." Scarier still, this wasn't a first: Ten months ago she took a drive while sleeping and ended up in another city.

I remember a news article about a man who burned to death and the only things burned was him and the chair he sat on nothing else. They thought that maybe, just maybe...

Monkey Tears Off Tot's Testicle And EATS It During Terrifying Zoo Attack

The distressing attack took place at the Guiyang Qianling Wildlife Park in Guìyáng, the capital of Guizhou province in Southwest China

An eight month old baby is recovering in hospital after a monkey tore off one of his testicles before running away and eating it.
The distressing attack took place at the Guiyang Qianling Wildlife Park in Guìyáng, the capital of Guizhou province in Southwest China, according to reports. The mother was changing her son's nappy when the animal attacked, ripping off the testicle before dropping it onto the ground. An elderly man then reportedly picked up the severed appendage but the monkey snatched it from his hand before scampering away and eating it.The boy's injury is not life-threatening, Chinese media reports.Monkey numbers at the zoo are said to have rocketed from around 70 to 500 in the past few years. The animals are fed three times a day by their keepers. However, members of the public are understood to like to feed the monkeys too - despite the presence of signs warning against this.
The reports also claim that monthly incidents involving the monkeys at Guiyang, of varying degrees of severity, are now running in the hundreds.

(AP) Man crushed to death by grapes in Spain
MADRID
Emergency services say a man has died after being crushed by grapes during the annual harvest in the central Spanish wine producing region of Castilla-La Mancha.

A local rescue service center said Friday the man was pulled out of a winery grape reception bay that he fell into the day before, just as a truck unloaded 5.5 tons (5 metric tons) of grapes ready for crushing into juice for winemaking.

Ambulance operators and firefighters tried to resuscitate the man _ identified only by his initials, A.O. _ but he was declared dead just before midnight Thursday.

With around 465,350 hectares (1,790 square miles) of vineyards, Castilla-La Mancha is considered to have more land dedicated to grape cultivation than any other region in the world.

(NEWSER) – The five-second rule: old wives' tale or science? According to a professor of microbiology at Birmingham, England's Aston University, the answer is ... it depends on whether you're in your bedroom or kitchen. Anthony Hilton and his biology students looked at two types of bacteria (E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus) on three flooring options: carpet, laminate, tile. Toast, pasta, a cookie, and a "sticky sweet" were dropped on the various surfaces and rested there for 3 to 30 seconds. When it came to the transfer of bacteria, both time and flooring type played a role.Bacteria were least likely to hop aboard the fallen bite if carpet was involved; when "moist" foods hit laminate and tiled surfaces, bacteria was more likely to transfer when contact was made for more than 5 seconds. The upshot, per Hilton: "We have found evidence that transfer from indoor flooring surfaces is incredibly poor." That's likely welcome news to the 87% of people the students surveyed who reported a willingness to adhere to the five-second rule. Writing for Forbes, Alice Walton notes that the findings should be taken with a grain of salt—preferably one not dropped on the floor. She points out that the study doesn't seem to have been peer-reviewed or accepted for publication anywhere. (A previous report on the topic noted that food dropped on the sidewalk was likely safer to eat than that on the kitchen floor.)
